A community built by long-time residents
Unlike many neighborhoods in Milwaukee and West Allis, where houses are arranged in neat rows and columns, the streets of Honey Acres curve and bend like the small creek that runs through the community. While the water and green space around it divide the neighborhood, the residents remain united over a love of their homes, the amenities nearby and a community they've created. "Honey Acres is off the beaten path and away from the main roads but is still in a convenient location because of the secondary road that runs alongside it," says Marietta Ticali, a Realtor at Realty Executives Integrity. With little through traffic and windy roads shaded by tall trees, the neighborhood has suburban charm and city convenience. Mowed lawns, trimmed hedges, flower beds and lawn ornaments are standard on the streets where young families move in next to generational residents. "There are a lot of long-time residents that know one another and have formed a strong community," Ticali says. "The last home I sold was in the same family for over 50 years. People live in the homes they and their parents were raised in."

Well-maintained yards and shaded, winding roads
Growth in Honey Acres began in 1920 when factories created new jobs, and industry boomed in West Allis. A need for housing arose, and bungalows, Cape Cods, ranch-style homes and split-levels came to the residential streets. Despite their age, the single-family homes are in great condition and range between $180,000 and $400,000. Prices are less expensive than the Milwaukee Metro average, yards are slightly larger than other areas in West Allis and homes rarely go on the market. This combination makes for a quick selling point, and houses rarely last more than three weeks on the market. "The newcomers to the area who can find a home are usually young families with children," Ticali says. Some residents rent apartments at the neighborhood's northeast corner, but most own their homes for primary residency. The southwest corner of Honey Acres has one condominium complex, and units range between $100,000 and $160,000.

West Allis transitioned back to neighborhood schools
Students living on the neighborhood's west side attend Mitchell Elementary School, followed by Frank Lloyd Wright Intermediate. The schools are rated a B-minus and C, respectively. Those living in the eastern half of the neighborhood attend C-plus Jefferson Elementary, followed by West Milwaukee Intermediate, rated a C. Both sides come together until graduation at Central High School, which is rated a C-plus. Like Milwaukee, West Allis once offered school of choice, but "The school district just went back to having designated neighborhood schools a few years ago," says Mayor Dan Devine, currently serving in his fourth term as mayor for West Allis. "This ruffled some feathers at first but ultimately helped strengthen the neighborhoods. There are more opportunities to build a community and know one another through the schools."

A public pool at McCarty Park
Arnold Klentz Park is a small park in the neighborhood's northeastern end with two baseball infields and a small playground. Locals can stretch their legs or play fetch with their dogs in the open space surrounding Honey Creek, which meanders through the middle of the neighborhood. Honey Creek is prone to flooding, but waters rarely reach the residential areas. The creek connects north to McCarty Park, the largest neighborhood park in the city and the only one with a public pool. Walking trails wind around the baseball diamonds, tennis courts and fishing pond of McCarty Park, and the trails are on the Kinnickinnic Line of the Oak Leaf Trail. The Oak Leaf Trail is a 135-mile paved multiuse trail that encompasses and intersects Milwaukee and its smaller surrounding cities.
