Honey Creek Settlement
Urban Pioneer Neighborhood in West Allis, Wisconsin
Milwaukee County 53219, 53227
Homes show their age in style, not condition
Contrasting trim and roofs adorn many bungalow homes and simple Victorian duplexes. Built primarily in the 1920s and 1930s, the houses have popular elements from the time, like Jerkinhead roofs, high-pitched roofs or squat porches with tapered columns. Single-family homes range from $145,000 to $310,000, while duplexes and multi-family houses with up to four units sell between $200,000 and $475,000. Homeowners take good care of their lawns, decorating them with shrubbery, flowers, lawn ornaments and American flags. Detached garages at the end of narrow driveways are standard, and each yard has sidewalks out front. Trees provide shade, and South 79th Street is especially scenic, with trees on either side of the road that make an almost mile-long canopy south toward McCarty Park. Houses typically sell in less than two weeks. "Safety means a lot in our community," Koszalka says. "As with any populated area, it's good to stay alert, but I feel very comfortable walking around the neighborhood – even at night."History reenactments around Honey Creek Park
Honey Creek Park has more than just athletic outlets like a baseball diamond and a field for soccer. The park and its attached cemetery are where visitors can see the old Honey Creek Log Cabin Schoolhouse, the West Allis water tower and tombstones that date back to the 1800s. West Allis Historical Society Museum, at the corner of the park, hosts educational events like war reenactments, immersive experiences in the schoolhouse and guided tours showing what life was like nearly 200 years ago. If that weren't enough, more than a dozen tree species grow in Honey Creek Park, providing shade around the walking trails and gazebo. Rogers Park is in Wood Dale, the neighborhood east of Honey Creek Settlement.Neighborhood schools strengthen villages
Children can walk to class at Franklin Elementary School, rated a C-plus by Niche and in the neighborhood's northwestern corner. Frank Lloyd Wright Intermediate is rated a C, and West Allis Central High School is rated a C-plus. Each school is within 2 miles of the neighborhood and offers students free breakfast and lunch, regardless of financial status. West Allis Public Library is nearby and provides programming for the local schools. "We are very involved," says Emily Rutter, West Allis Public Library's adult services and circulation supervisor. "We attend events, parent-teacher night and the back-to-school bash at the beginning of the school year."Milwaukee Mile and The Wisconsin State Fair
The Wisconsin State Fair Park is just 1 mile north of the neighborhood and a major event for West Allis, Milwaukee and Wisconsin residents. The week-long event brings in over 1 million visitors annually and set a new crowd record this past year. Parking at the state fairgrounds can be a hassle, but those living in Honey Creek Settlement can walk instead. On the same grounds as the state fair is Milwaukee Mile, the oldest motor speedway in the world, which is still operating today. Races happen a few times throughout the year.Free from commuter traffic to Milwaukee
Aurora West Allis Medical Center is nearby and is one of the city's leading employers. Downtown Milwaukee is 8 miles east, and National Avenue is one of the main streets. West Allis is bordered by Interstates 94 and 41, so commuter traffic and through traffic is rare. "I've never had any issues commuting from Milwaukee to West Allis and back," Rutter says. A few buses run along South 76th Street, and most residents drive personal vehicles to run errands and commute. There is some flooding in the center of the neighborhood, at the low points around Honey Creek.A growing dining scene overflowing from downtown
Residents enjoy the Street-Za pizza truck at different places around the city or its regular spot at the corner of West Grant Street and South 84th Street. The pizza truck is rated among the top 25 food trucks in America by the Food Network. The east side of West Allis is developing, with new restaurants and stores opening in old factories and converted homes. This growth extends west into the residential areas near downtown. Taqueria El Toro serves tacos, nachos and burritos from a bright orange shack and walk-up window. Pick 'n Save, Hobby Lobby, national stores and restaurants are to the east. However, the area's largest shopping destination is 2 miles west, past Interstate 41.
