Surrounded by action but filled with suburban charm
Despite being surrounded by some of Milwaukee's most prominent attractions, LaFollette Park holds onto its suburban appeal with tree-lined streets, strong community ties and charming events at the neighborhood park. The neighborhood is in a corner of connectivity, surrounded by two main freeways. The highways are convenient for commuting directly to downtown but not needed when traveling to a major league baseball game, the city zoo or the state fair just outside the area. With a stable community and approachable housing prices, residents can take solace in knowing that, regardless of how much action surrounds their neighborhood, they can return home to their cozy houses and friendly streets.

Making the best of nearby events
The Wisconsin State Fair began in 1851 in Janesville, Wisconsin, bringing in approximately 15 people. Since then, the fair relocated to West Allis, just east of LaFollette Park, and grew to over 75 times its size in attendance. In 2024, the fair brought in a record-breaking 1.13 million people looking to check out the exhibits, concerts, rides and food the fair brings each year. The Wisconsin State Fair Park is also where visitors can watch a race at The Milwaukee Mile Speedway, the world's oldest operating motor speedway. While the two major attractions can cause some annoyance and traffic in the area for a few weeks of the summer, residents of LaFollette Park lean into the excitement and turn lemons into lemonade. "A lot of the residents near the fairgrounds actually do parking on their lawns during the state fair," says Mandi Miller, Realtor with Re/Max Forward, a top seller in West Allis. The Milwaukee County Zoo averages about 1.3 million visitors annually, just opposite a large highway interchange from LaFollette Park. American Family Field is a little farther from the neighborhood but worth the trip. Originally called Miller Park, the stadium is where the Milwaukee Brewers Major League Baseball team plays.

In a corner of connectivity
Interstate 41 acts as a western border for the neighborhood, and thanks to new walls constructed along the highway, the interstate brings convenience without too much sound or eyesore. Interstate 94 is very close but sees some traffic during daily rush hour and events at American Family Field or Wisconsin State Fair Park. "During the fair, traffic is a nightmare," says Suzanne Singh, the neighborhood services specialist for West Allis's planning and zoning department. "People can sit on the off-ramp for over an hour trying to get to the fair. And then parking is another issue." Those in the neighborhood who want to catch a Brewers game but avoid traffic on the highway can walk or bike to the field via Hank Aaron State Trail. The paved trail leads 3 miles directly from LaFollette Park to the stadium. West Allis is a walkable city with sidewalks along nearly every road and a growing number of designated bike lanes on city and county roads. The city also recently gained Lime Scooters for added micromobility. Downtown Milwaukee is 7 miles away via Interstate 94, and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 13 miles southeast. Aurora West Allis Medical Center is a large employer of West Allis and less than 2 miles south.

Fast-selling homes with little turnaround
Houses do not go on the market often in LaFollette Park; when they do, they sell after an average of only seven days. Trees planted when the neighborhood was developed stand between roads and sidewalks, shading the neighborhood. "The housing stock is nice and fairly affordable," Miller says. "I love the homes here. I know they're older, but they have so much character not found in newer builds." Single-family homes built from 1920 to 1960 make up most of the housing, ranging between $180,000 and $340,000. Some bungalows, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes listed as an "investment" or "flipping opportunity" sell for as low as $100,000. There are a limited number of multi-family homes and duplexes in the neighborhood, selling between $275,000 and $325,000. Even though the city puts signs up for state fairgoers to refrain from parking on residential roads, the streets around the neighborhood can get crowded during the fair. Fortunately, most residents have detached garages in their narrow yards and don't have to fight for parking.

Friends of LaFollette Park
The neighborhood's namesake, LaFollette Park, is in the middle of the neighborhood and has tennis courts, a playground, a splash pad and softball diamonds. Walking trails go under tall trees and past rentable pavilions, where community events occur. Friends of LaFollette Park is an unofficial neighborhood group that meets monthly in the park and organizes events like National Night Out, Movie Night at the Park and Music in the Park. Locals who live around the neighborhood are encouraged to join the meetings, and according to Singh, "New neighborhood associations in West Allis are given a $1,000 grant and are recognized by the mayor." The money usually goes to building memberships by printing flyers and getting local businesses involved. Despite their unofficial status, the community group also holds a Great Pumpkin Hunt in October, a pancake breakfast and Easter egg hunt in the spring and makes an ice rink in the winter months. However, locals can walk or drive to Pettit National Ice Center for year-round skating. "There is open skate and classes for the community, but Pettit Ice Center is an Olympic training center first and foremost," Miller says. "It's known for its speed skating and figure skating Olympic training programs."

Play a game while waiting for take-out
The neighborhood is mostly residential, except for a few businesses and offices along West Schlinger Avenue and some restaurants on West Greenfield Avenue. Alphonso's – The Original Pizzeria is a popular take-put spot for meatball subs, calzones and garlic bread oozing with cheese and Italian seasonings. While waiting for their food to be ready, patrons can play on an old-school video game machine or browse the murals, memorabilia and collectibles on display. Some locals grocery shopping at Parthenon Foods, a European market, and Aldi and Festival Foods are just 2 miles west, past Interstate 41.
