Rainbow Gardens
Urban Pioneer Neighborhood in West Allis, Wisconsin
Milwaukee County 53214
Some of the city's newer homes, despite approaching 100 years.
The City of West Allis developed westward, and Rainbow Gardens is at the westernmost point of the city. Though homes are from 1930 through 1970, they are among the city's newest. "There is a nice housing stock and affordable prices," Singh says. Cape Cods, small Colonial Revivals, ranch-style and split-level homes have uniform-sized lawns, often with detached garages and privacy fences around the back. Homes sell between $200,000 and $450,000, with the largest and most well-maintained among the most expensive. With a median price of $270,000, Rainbow Gardens has one of the higher medians for West Allis neighborhoods but is still about $100,000 less than the national median. Houses regularly sell in less than two weeks after listing. The neighborhood association is revitalizing with new events and members
According to Singh, the Rainbow Gardens Neighborhood Association was one of the original recognized associations in West Allis. Like many other associations in the city, they went dormant in 2020. "They have since recently revitalized, have a new Board of Directors and are actively engaging with residents through community meetings, events and socials," Singh says. Events include an ice cream social, a pumpkin carving and Halloween event in October, a winter festival and an Easter egg hunt at Rainbow Park. There are also regular safety and board meetings for residents to gather and share ideas for improving the community.Baseball leagues and a community garden at Rainbow Park
Rainbow Park is at the center of Rainbow Gardens, north of most homes but south of the large industrial park that borders Interstate 94 and takes up half the neighborhood. Little League and adult baseball leagues play at the park's two diamonds, and soccer teams practice on the large field. In addition to tennis courts, a newly installed playground and a wading pool, the park has a community garden with plots available through The Extension Milwaukee County Garden Rental program. Greenfield Park is next door, south of West Greenfield Avenue. The park is the largest in West Allis and has a full golf course, a water park and walking trails through dense woods. Giraffes, elephants, flamingos and cheetahs all live within 2 miles of the neighborhood at the Milwaukee County Zoo.Fifteen minutes from Milwaukee and smaller nearby cities
Interstate 94 runs along the neighborhood's northern border, leading 9 miles east to downtown Milwaukee. Milwaukee County Transit System buses stop throughout the neighborhood, along Greenfield Avenue, Highway 100 and less busy residential roads. The neighborhood is at the northwest corner of West Allis and close to the nearby cities and villages of Wauwatosa, Brookfield, New Berlin and Elm Grove. "Everything is within 15 minutes of West Allis, especially when using the highway," Singh says. Froedtert Hospital is the nearest hospital, 3 miles northeast in Wauwatosa, and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 13 miles southeast.Walking to elementary school, and getting active at converted middle school
Children begin learning at Walker Elementary School, rated B on Niche. The school is in the center of the neighborhood, next to Rainbow Park and within walking distance of every home. Students used to attend Lane Intermediate School in the neighborhood, but the campus was recently converted into an activity and fitness center run by the West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation and Community Services Department. Instead, students now attend Frank Lloyd Wright Intermediate School, rated C. Nathan Hale High School is rated B-minus. Mary Queen of Saints Catholic Academy is a private school in the neighborhood, associated with Mother of Perpetual Help church.Highway 100 has a large assortment of stores and restaurants
South 108th Street, also called Highway 100, is along the neighborhood's eastern edge. The busy street goes south, transforming into West Allis' main shopping strip with big-box stores, restaurants, grocery chains and car dealerships. Some locally owned restaurants are near the intersection of West Greenfield Avenue and Highway 100, including Tandoor Restaurant, The Fatty Patty and Sammy's Taste of Chicago. Festival Foods is within a short walk of some homes and a short drive from others.
