Rainbow Gardens has a strong community that gathers for events
Rainbow Gardens is close to the highway, a busy shopping strip and some big outdoor attractions. It's who lives in Rainbow Gardens, however, that sets it apart from other nearby neighborhoods with relatively affordable homes and easy access to everyday amenities. The area has an active neighborhood association with regular events that promote a strong sense of community and friendliness. "The people most excited about getting involved are those who just moved here," says Suzanne Singh, West Allis's community and neighborhood services coordinator. "They're looking for community and a place to call home base."

Some of the city's newer homes, despite approaching 100 years.
The City of West Allis developed westward, and Rainbow Gardens is at the westernmost point of the city. Though homes are from 1930 through 1970, they are among the city's newest. "There is a nice housing stock and affordable prices," Singh says. Cape Cods, small Colonial Revivals, ranch-style and split-level homes have uniform-sized lawns, often with detached garages and privacy fences around the back. Homes sell between $200,000 and $450,000, with the largest and most well-maintained among the most expensive. With a median price of $270,000, Rainbow Gardens has one of the higher medians for West Allis neighborhoods but is still about $100,000 less than the national median. Houses regularly sell in less than two weeks after listing.

The neighborhood association is revitalizing with new events and members
According to Singh, the Rainbow Gardens Neighborhood Association was one of the original recognized associations in West Allis. Like many other associations in the city, they went dormant in 2020. "They have since recently revitalized, have a new Board of Directors and are actively engaging with residents through community meetings, events and socials," Singh says. Events include an ice cream social, a pumpkin carving and Halloween event in October, a winter festival and an Easter egg hunt at Rainbow Park. There are also regular safety and board meetings for residents to gather and share ideas for improving the community.
