Rose Hill is a tucked-away hub near main streets and city convenience

Rose Hill is sandwiched in a corner of connectivity, close to interstates, shopping, employers and entertainment. The little West Allis neighborhood is bordered to the north and east by busy interstates, providing quick drives to larger cities nearby, including Milwaukee , Wauwatosa and Waukesha . "That's one of the great things about West Allis itself – that you're easy on and off the freeways," says John Klose Jr., the broker and owner of Klose Realty LLC and lifelong local of the area. To the south and west of the neighborhood are main streets for shopping and dining that lead to local parks and schools. "It's a perfect place to live in the sense that you have reasonably priced housing in a good area, and you're close to everything," Klose says.

Modest homes and lawns at more affordable prices than nearby cities

Small, single-family homes from the early to mid-1900s line the streets of Rose Hill. Bungalows, petite Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes are in the area, and Cape Cods are the most prevalent. Yards are narrow and close together, with skinny driveways leading to detached garages and small backyards. Prices range from $165,000 to $390,000 across all styles, with limited two-story, four-bedroom homes among the most expensive. Klose explains that, while prices are rising, Rose Hill still has relatively affordable prices compared to the nearby cities of Wauwatosa, Brookfield and Milwaukee. "Those little Cape Cods are still not insanely priced," he says. "Although the prices in West Allis have almost doubled in the past five years." On average, homes sell in less than two weeks from listing, and there is a high percentage of homeownership.

Busy roads are nearby, but the neighborhood itself is traffic-free

Rose Hill is well connected and accessible, with interstates, recreational trails, bus stops and sidewalks around its borders. Interstates 94 and 41 are two prominent freeways of southeastern Wisconsin, leading about 8 miles east to Milwaukee, west towards Brookfield and Waukesha, and north towards Green Bay . Milwaukee County Transit System buses stop along West Greenfield Avenue and South 108th Street, also known as Highway 100. While Rose Hill is between main roads that can be busy with traffic and noise, the neighborhood itself is quiet and uncongested. "It's a little pocket," Klose says. "It's tucked away from it all. There's not a lot of drive-through traffic." The neighborhood is divided north to south by an active train track that carries freight, but a walking bridge under the tracks connects the two sides. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is about 13 miles away. Froedtert Hospital and Aurora West Allis Medical Center are both about 2 miles from Rose Hill.

Grocery stores, department stores and restaurants along two main roads

West Greenfield Avenue and South 108th Street are West Allis's main shopping and dining strips, intersecting at Rose Hill's southwestern corner. West Greenfield Avenue leads east to locally owned shops, restaurants and City Hall. South 108th Street heads south to shopping plazas with grocery stores, fast-food chains and department stores. Festival Foods, Aldi, Target, Pick 'n Save and Piggly Wiggly are all within 2 miles of the neighborhood. A few restaurants of different cuisines are within walking distance of home, including Las Fajitas for Mexican food, Pho Saigon for Vietnamese, Tandoor Restaurant for Indian and The Fatty Patty-West Allis for falafel and halal. Retail stores are in Brookfield, at the Brookfield Square shopping mall and in plazas along Bluemound Road.

School district improvements follow $70 million referendum

Children can begin learning at Walker Elementary School, rated B by Niche. Frank Lloyd Wright Intermediate School earns a C, and Nathan Hale High School is rated B-minus. Voters recently passed a more than $70 million referendum in early 2025 to give the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District a major facelift. The referendum will improve the school buildings with roofing, heating and cooling, security and fieldhouse updates. Students can attend public schools outside of their designated district through Wisconsin's Public School Open Enrollment Program.

Major city attractions and small community parks are close to home

The Hank Aaron State Trail traverses past Rose Hill, leading to the Milwaukee County Zoo, Wisconsin State Fair Park and American Family Field. Madison Park in the neighborhood has a playground and baseball diamond, and other West Allis green spaces are close. Greenfield Park is the largest in the city, with a fishing pond, a full public golf course, walking trails through a small forest and Cool Waters Aquatic Center.
