West Dennis offers waterfront homes and abundant recreation

The landscape of West Dennis is dotted with several kettle ponds, geologic formations that are thousands of years old and found across Cape Cod. The peninsula is home to over 360 such bodies of water. Left by retreating glaciers, today the ponds are frequented by swimmers, anglers and paddlers, and nearby beaches tracing the coastline of Nantucket Sound nearby are popular summertime destinations here. That access to recreation, both freshwater and saltwater, is what draws residents to West Dennis, one of five villages in a town that spans the breadth of the Cape. “West Dennis’ proximity to the beach is why people would select it,” says Shane Masaschi, a broker associate with Compass Real Estate who also serves as the Chatham Merchants Association’s treasurer. “It has people who aren’t looking for big lot sizes and who are looking for beach life.” While smaller lot sizes are the tradeoff, West Dennis still offers waterfront homes on some of the ponds, Grand Cove and the Bass River.

Cape Cods and ranch-style homes lining West Dennis Streets

Cape Cods and ranch-style homes are the most common architectural styles, with some built in the 1700s and 1800s. “Cape Cod houses are more on the smaller side because these areas are already built on smaller lots by the water,” Masaschi says. Most single-family homes cost between $550,000 and $1 million. Some homes, especially waterfront properties in the Fingers of West Dennis boating community, can cost in the multi-million-dollar range. Some properties on Grand Cove, Bass River or Kelleys Pond feature private docks.

Four Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District stops for students

Students are served by the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District, which earns a B-minus grade from Niche. Kids can first enroll at the Ezra H. Baker Innovation School, which also gets a B-minus, from kindergarten through third grade. The Dennis-Yarmouth Intermediate School has a C-plus for grades 4 and 5, and Dennis-Yarmouth Middle School receives a B-minus and hosts sixth and seventh grades. Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School also earns a B-minus. The high school’s sports teams are called the Dolphins and include football, field hockey and volleyball programs.

Fishing at Cape Cod kettle ponds and coastal recreation

On the north side of the neighborhood, Fresh Pond Conservation Area spans nearly 100 acres. Within the conservation area, Fresh Pond is popular for fishing and kayaking, with the surrounding area offering a trail and dog park. Anglers can cast lines from the shore at Kelleys Pond and boaters can set out on the Bass River. On the oceanfront, West Dennis Beach sits on Nantucket Sound. “West Dennis Beach is really great and it’s a huge draw,” Masaschi says. The beach also has a playground. Trotting Park Beach also sits along the coast. To the west of the neighborhood, golfers can hit the links at the public Blue Rock Golf Course. The Cape Cod Rail Trail begins just outside West Dennis and runs for nearly 30 miles into Wellfleet .

West Dennis eateries offer breakfast, seafood and more

State Route 28 doubles as West Dennis’ main street and is lined with local restaurants. The Summer Shanty has seafood at Bass River Marina on the west side. O’Shea’s Olde Inne has Irish-inspired fare and live music across from Moonfish Restaurant. The Breakfast Den is open seven days a week. Closer to the coast, the Sand Bar serves seafood with views of the water. “The Sand Bar has fish, a raw bar, pizzas and lobster rolls – what you’d expect in that area,” Masaschi says. “They also have live music and karaoke. It’s a pretty fun area of town.” Shoppers can head just north to the Stop & Shop at Patriot Square. Target is under 10 miles in the same direction.

Annual celebrations mark the Cape Cod seasons

Every summer, Dennis Festival Days last for a week and includes contests, games and an antique car parade. The West Dennis Beach Party, Bonfire and Fireworks closes the season with a literal bang at West Dennis Beach. Live music fills the air while attendees can roast marshmallows for s’mores at the bonfire itself. Just outside West Dennis, Santa Claus flies into Patriot Square on a helicopter every Christmas season.

Drivers get around on state Route 28 or U.S. Route 6

U.S. Route 6 is the primary thoroughfare on Cape Cod and runs by the neighborhood to the north. Massachusetts Route 28 passes through West Dennis on its way to the mainland. Boston is around 80 miles northwest. Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority buses run along Route 28, but there are no stops in West Dennis. Cape Cod Gateway Airport is less than 10 miles away in Hyannis and Boston Logan International Airport sits about 80 miles from West Dennis. Carewell Urgent Care South Dennis is just beyond the northern edge of the neighborhood.
