A slower pace of life in West Deptford Township

Along the banks of the Delaware River and incorporated in 1871, West Deptford Township is a deep-rooted and scenic community affording quick access to Philadelphia. Residents enjoy the community’s slow pace, established housing and water-side parks.

Newer homes in the Rolling Brook subdivision

West Deptford Township features a diverse blend of modern and traditional housing. Prospective buyers will find many ranch styles, cape cods and split levels from the mid-20th century that typically sport 1,500 square feet and three bedrooms. The area further developed in the 1990s with the addition of subdivisions like Rolling Brook. Newer subdivisions boast bigger houses at heftier price tags, often around 2,500 square feet for about $550,000. Homes cost anywhere between $200,000 and $550,000. Other housing options include luxury condominiums like the Cove at Riverwinds. While residents commonly enjoy a walk along the river, they also peruse the leafy, sidewalk-line streets beside their homes. Because of the community’s proximity to the water, several roads meet marshy wetlands and grassy fields.

Musicals and student council at West Deptford High School

Students in West Deptford Township attend schools under the West Deptford School District, which earned an overall B from Niche and welcomes just under 3,000 students across its seven schools. Children kickstart their education at either Oakview Elementary School or Green-Fields Elementary School, both of which earned an overall B on Niche. Students advance to West Deptford Middle School. The middle school was graded a five out of 10 on GreatSchools and has a student-to-teacher ratio of 12-to-1. Students then attend West Deptford High School to earn their diplomas. There’s something for every student, like the Renaissance Club, school musicals and student council. The high school touts an overall B-plus on Niche.

Wandering along the Delaware River

Residents embrace having the Delaware River within walking distance by enjoying a day at Rivergate Park. Many locals dock their boats at the park’s public boat ramp to catch some fish or sit on the small beach area and watch the sun fade in the Philadelphia skyline. Locals also frequent the Red Bank Battlefield Park for scenic views and deep-rooted history. Check out the trenches and cannons from Fort Mercer, where American forces worked with Fort Mifflin across the river to stop British ships from descending on Philadelphia. Tour the battlefield site plus an old field hospital, the James Whitall Jr. House built in 1766 with Georgian red brick architecture. Wander around the scenic walking trails or absorb the Philadelphia skyline from a park bench and bring the kids to the playground. For extras like living history tours or demonstrations, check the park out during a major event like the 18th Century Field Day or Family History Festival. Local athletes have a home at West Deptford Park. The park sports several multi-use sports fields, often used by local leagues like the West Deptford Soccer Club.

Happy hour at National Park Pub

When residents need groceries, they head to Mantau Pike for several grocery stores like Aldi, ACME Market and ShopRite. And for a bite to eat, there are several locally-owned restaurant options. Locals dock boats outside Coconut Grove Dockside Bar for river views, mixed drinks and wings. Or eat a slice of pizza on an outdoor deck with local live music during happy hour at National Park Pub.

Travel via I-295

West Deptford Township is in a proximal location for travel, as Interstate 295 passes through the heart of the community. Locals that work in Philadelphia have a 15-mile trip north across the Delaware River. For residents that use public transportation, West Deptford is served by the NJ Transit system.

Nice, quiet town. Everyone knows each other and looks out for one another. Small school in the middle of the community.
