Rural central Maine homes with large yards
Many Howland homes are New England styles, such as Cape Cods. There are also a number of manufactured homes. Dube says the community's homes are known for being older and were often built in the early to mid-20th century. Many residences are surrounded by larger lawns, with plenty of space for gardens or mature trees to shade them. Land sales are between $25,000 and $30,0000, and single-family homes commonly range from $125,000 to $400,000.Penobscot and Piscataquis River fun
With access to two rivers, Howland has a variety of options for outdoor fun. Residents often head to the Howland Public Playground, which is within walking distance of many homes and offers a number of sports fields and an updated playset. Right across the street and next to the town office, Old Tannery Park has a veteran’s memorial and a boat ramp leading right into the Penobscot River. There are numerous lakes around the community, offering more options for aquatic recreation. The park is also known for the flowers the community plants each fall, which brighten up the area in the spring. Trails and scenic views can be found at the nearby Pond Farm State Wildlife Management Area, known for its variety of wildlife and popular with bird watchers, fishermen and hunters.Public school in and around Howland
Students can start their education outside of Howland at Enfield Station Elementary School, which earns a C-plus rating on Niche. Hichborn Middle School is in town and also receives a C-plus rating. They can then finish at the C-rated Penobscot Valley High School, where the girls soccer team won the state championship in the fall of 2023.Fishing Derbies and Memorial Day celebrations
Howland is home to a couple of annual events, with one of the largest being the Howland Fishing Derby. Each July since 2018, the community gathers around the Penobscot and Piscataquis Rivers and casts their reels into the water in hopes of catching a prize-winning bass, white perch or chain pickerel. The town also has a Memorial Day event, which begins with services at cemeteries around the community and leads into a parade that ends at the American Legion building, where snacks are served as the American flag is raised to the national anthem.I-95 and U.S. Route 2 on either side of town
Cars are an essential part of the Howland community, and access to major roads like Interstate 95 makes it easy to get around. Interstate 95 sits west of town, and U.S. Route 2 sits east, connecting the community to larger neighboring areas like Lincoln and Bangor. Water Street and Penobscot Avenue connect homes to the interstate as well as local schools. The Bangor International Airport is 35 miles to the south, and the Penobscot Valley Hospital is 12 miles to the north in Lincoln.95 Diner and Chubby’s Dairy Bar
Those who do not live in the community still know of the 95 Handy Stop Market and Diner, which is one of the eateries in Howland. “It has the best chicken salad sandwiches and some of the best haddock chowder,” Dube says. For a sweet treat, residents can also stop by Chubby’s Dairy Bar, a newer addition to the area that offers slow-churned ice cream for milkshakes, sundaes and even a doggy dish for furry friends. Residents can shop at Handy Stop along Bridge Street or head to the Howland Farmers and Artisans Market every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
