Elmwood Court
Durable contemporary homes to tackle the plains weather
Vinyl-sided twins, ramblers and two-story contemporary homes line the streets of Elmwood Court along with a handful of condos and townhouses. Mature elms and maples poke above the rooflines, scattered in backyards, a hint towards the age of the neighborhood. Most homes were built around the turn of the millennium, older than homes below Interstate 94 but still modern. Fencing cuts along property lines, keeping pets and children in while offering a touch of privacy, particularly valuable along the tightly-packed twin home streets. Oversized garages face the street, with space for at least two vehicles and storage for winter tools and toys. Most garages are insulated, providing protection during weeks of below-freezing temperatures, which are common. Another nod to the age of the neighborhood, prices here are generally $60,000 to $75,000 lower than the median across the Fargo metro area. Twin homes and townhouses generally sell for $225,000 to $325,000, while single-family homes regularly get between $290,000 and $410,000.West Fargo students find success in athletics and the arts
Students in Elmwood Court will usually attend West Fargo Public Schools, rated as the second-best school district for athletes in North Dakota. They’ll start out at Westside Elementary School, graded a B-plus by Niche, before attending Cheney Middle School, which gets a B from the site. West Fargo High School, also graded a B, is the home of the Packers. West Fargo was a major agricultural processor in the early 1900s, and the name is a nod to the fact that most residents worked in meat packing houses. In addition to recent championship wins in football, basketball, baseball and swimming, the theater department has earned multiple state championships in the One Act Play division.Fargo, a 20-minute city
Residents of Elmwood Court might be in the western extremes of Fargo, but they’re still only moments away from downtown, thanks to Interstate 94 running along the border. This can make for a slightly elevated noise level for some homes, a price of convenience. Downtown is a 9-mile drive, doable in under 20 minutes, even at rush hour. The neighborhood offers limited biking and walking, with the parks and grocery store within reach, but everything else requires a car due to limited public transit. Sanford Medical Center, the largest and newest facility for Fargo’s largest job provider, is 3 miles from the neighborhood and provides 24-hour emergency treatment. Hector International Airport is roughly 10 miles away, but as with everything else, it’s reachable within 20 minutes or less.Carnival rides, bull rides and classic rides
While there are no events in the neighborhood itself, residents are just moments away from downtown West Fargo and The Lights, both hotspots for events throughout the year. This includes everything from concerts to car shows like the monthly West Fargo Cruise nights. One of the big events at The Lights is the annual Pro Bull Riding event, says Mike Amundson, Executive Director of West Fargo Events, “We bring in professional riders, the tickets are extremely reasonable - they cost less than half of the PBR events. Pro bull riding has a special place in our hearts and in our community. North Dakota embraces western sports pretty well, it’s always fun!” On top of this, the biggest event in the region, the Red River Valley Fair, is less than 3 miles north – running over three weekends in late June and early July, it features nationally touring musicians, rides and an active midway with food and games.Pocket parks and a unique suburban fishing opportunity
South Elmwood Park is one of the many pocket parks found across the modern neighborhoods in Fargo and West Fargo, offering green space for play as well as a small playground. A paved trail connects it with North Elmwood Park, which features similar amenities; it also reaches the south, cutting under I-94 and connecting with the neighborhoods to the south. Residents can often be seen walking and biking with their poles and nets to the community fishery in Brooks Harbor. Just north of Elmwood Court, the West Fargo Soccer Complex is home to West Fargo youth soccer, with over a dozen fields of varying sizes for all ages.Dining out and daily shopping is on the way home
With a Hornbacher’s between I-94 and the neighborhood itself, picking up groceries on the way home in the evening is a quick stop for residents, although many are close enough to walk there if they need a bag or two of goods. Most residents will head to Sheyenne Street for dining out – to the north, the West Fargo location of Thunder Coffee roasts and brews their own blends, ready to start the day off right. Just up the road, Junkyard Brewing provides a place to wind down in the evenings with house-brewed beers, food trucks and entertainment. Bar Down, Traditions and Hooligans to the south all offer their own takes on the usual bar and grill offerings, while Randy’s Diner Too provides all-day breakfast and hearty dinners. Major retailers, including Lowe’s, Menards, Walmart and more, sit roughly 3 miles away along 13th Avenue.America’s past-time is alive and well in Elmwood Court
The home to West Fargo Baseball – a sport second only to hockey in the city – Essentia Health Baseball Complex lines the eastern edge of Elmwood Court, with well-maintained grass fields as well as Young Field, which features a synthetic turf infield. A new addition to the complex and scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2025, SCHEELS Performance Center will offer indoor training areas, including over 25,000 square feet of turf for year-round baseball skill development. Particularly on tournament days, this can bring noise and traffic into the neighborhood – some homes are close enough to hear the ping of balls off aluminum bats.
