Small-town living in a walkable West Fargo neighborhood

As the city of West Fargo continues to expand and neighborhoods become increasingly car-dependent, Meyer residents appreciate their area for its walkability and proximity to local parks, schools and shopping. Long sidewalks stretch along Meyer's suburban streets and grassy lawns, making it easy for families to get outside or for folks to spend time with their neighbors. Having nearby amenities like the Hulbert Aquatic Center or the Veteran's Memorial Arena also enables folks to get out and about while also supporting community athletics. "We invite people to come out to group events like skating at Skate City or to go see the Red Hawks play," says Jodi Van Peursem, an office administrator at Red River Church, which is located within the neighborhood. "You really get a sense for the small-town community in what I would call this little-big city."

Spacious suburban housing in Meyer

Built in the late '70s, housing in Meyer has more character than other neighboring areas. Homes represent a mix of suburban styles, from split-levels to traditional, with some modern detailing thrown in the mix. Wide windows to let in natural light are common and most homes feature either brick facades or vinyl siding painted in neutral hues that complement the neighborhood's greenery. Selling from about $240,000 to $380,000 dollars, homes in Meyer are also more spacious than those in older neighborhoods, offering two stories and three to four bedrooms. Fenced-in backyards are common too, with enough space for outdoor playsets, pools or for dogs to run around.

The Meyer neighborhood is also within walking distance of two different elementary schools within the West Fargo Public Schools system. Located right on 6th Street, Eastwood Elementary is closer to most homes, though L.E. Berger Elementary is just a block north, with both schools receiving B-minus grades from Niche. Older students can attend Cheney Middle and West Fargo High, which both get a B grade from Niche. West Fargo is also just east of Meyer, located right on 9th Street. Earning a B from Niche, West Fargo is known for its array of athletics programs, with options ranging from hockey and football to tennis and baseball. Known as the Packers, the school is named after Fargo's historic role as an agricultural processor and center for meat packing houses.

Athletic and outdoor opportunities in the neighborhood

Folks in Meyer don't have to travel far to get outside. Families can take the little ones to play at the local schools' playgrounds or head to the Tower's Soccer Complex to let them run around it's large open fields. Just a mile west of the neighborhood, Elmwood Park sits right along the Sheyenne River and features a large playground, baseball diamond, tennis court and a sand volleyball net where friends can challenge each other to a game. Whether cooling off in the summer or staying indoors in the winter, Hulbert Aquatic Center is another nearby option. Located right next to L.E. Berger Elementary, the center offers community exercise programs and open swim times in addition to hosting swim and diving meets for participants from all around the country. "Our last big swim meet brought schools from 42 different states and over a million dollars to the community with all the money-generated from hotels, shopping and food from when they come to town," says Gerald Brown, Aquatics Director at the Hulbert Aquatic Center.

Celebrate the city at West Fest

West Fest is a local event that brings people from the area together. Held every September, this local parade is an opportunity for West Fargo's small businesses, non-profits and clubs to connect with the public, make floats and celebrate one another. "You'll see how much the community supports that," says Van Peursem. One of the biggest annual parades in the state, this event happens right along Sheyenne Street, about a mile west of Meyer.
