A hint of nature in Fargo’s expanding southwestern suburbs
From the tree-lined banks of the Sheyenne River to the trio of ponds in the heart of the community, Shadow Wood-Shadow Creek brings waterfront living to West Fargo. “It’s an extremely sought-after neighborhood due to its proximity to grocery stores, restaurants, schools and gyms. Everything you need is near or within walking distance,” says Erik Wall, Army veteran, Realtor & Team Owner of the Wall Street Realty Team brokered by eXp Realty. Residents here are close to the Sanford Medical Center and its healthcare services, the Red River Zoo and the Fargo Force games at Scheels Arena. It’s a combination of proximity, amenities and nature that is unique to Fargo’s ever-expanding suburbs.
Modern suburban homes with similar design cues
Modern single-family ramblers and bi-levels feature a mix of traditional and Craftsman design influences in Shadow Wood-Shadow Creek. These contemporary homes–most built in the early 2010s–feature a combination of vinyl siding and stone or brick accents common of the era. Oversized two-stall garages with storage for winter gear are also common, with select homes having three- and even four-stall garages. While most sit on flat, fenced lots roughly a fifth-of-an-acre in size, those near the ponds and the river often enjoy up to a half-acre of space. Older homes and built-to-plan models sell for $325,000 to $700,000. Custom builds and lots with waterside views command higher pricing, selling for $740,000 to $950,000, with some asking above $1 million.

A brand new elementary school for students
Students in Shadow Wood-Shadow Creek get to start at Meadowlark Elementary School, which opened for the 2024 school year. It’s West Fargo’s 15th elementary school, built to accommodate the rapidly expanding student body, and has yet to be rated by Niche. While they’ll have to take the bus to Meadowlark, most will be able to walk to Liberty Middle School and West Fargo Sheyenne High School for their secondary school years–these are located on the same campus at the southeast corner of the neighborhood, just across the street for some students. These schools are rated with a B-minus and a B, respectively, by Niche. Niche also ranks Sheyenne as the fifth-best public high school in North Dakota for college prep. Students pursuing a faith-based education in the St. John Paul II Catholic Schools system start at Trinity Elementary School, then head to Sacred Heart Middle and Shanley High School.
Known for its academic rigor, Liberty Middle School helps students reach their potential.

Nearby Interstate 94 provides regional access
Proximity to offices, business centers, schools and restaurants makes the neighborhood somewhat walkable, and dedicated paths that weave through the communities provide for safe biking. However, residents are generally dependent on cars to get around. Interstate 94 is located just to the north, helping drivers make it to Downtown Fargo–a 9-mile drive–in under 20 minutes. Hector International Airport is even closer for regional and international flights, and while it’s nearly 10 miles away, the highways that lead there cut the drive to only 15 minutes. Sanford Medical Center–a 24-hour emergency care center with top trauma units–is 2 miles away and serves the tri-state region. It's also one of the top job providers for the entire city, with staff living in many of the surrounding neighborhoods.

Shadow Wood Park is in the center of the community
Overlooking the ponds at the center of the community, Shadow Wood Park is the place to relax on temperate summer days. “It’s filled with natural beauty and it’s a great escape from everyday life,” says Wall. From picnics beneath the shelter to neighborhood kids dancing through the splash pad and playing on the playgrounds to pick-up basketball games on the court, it’s a summer destination. There are also indoor opportunities nearby for when the cold of winter rolls in, with the Rustad Recreation Center and Family Wellness Fargo offering opportunities for kids and adults to expend energy while also being protected from the harsh Dakota weather.

Fargo loves its family bar and grilles
Several coffee shops help residents kick off the day: “We have local favorite Bully Brew Coffee just across Veterans Boulevard,” says Chris Mogard, Realtor with the Wall Street Realty Team, whose office is in the northeast corner of the neighborhood. Scooter's Coffee and Chai Moto are also on the way out of the community. He also points out Brewtus Brickhouse as an office favorite, citing its wonderful service and fun atmosphere along with its bar and grille menu. The American bar and grille style is one of the most popular restaurant types in the area–and spans from Hooligans and Traditions to the west, to Bar Down at The Lights, to Oasis just north. Here residents are spoiled by choice. When they want to cook at home and need to grab groceries, they can swing by Cash Wise Foods West Fargo, next to Brewtus, or head just north to Costco for bulk buys.

Residents in the northwest corner of the neighborhood can sit in their backyards and hear the national acts that play at the Essentia Health Plaza at The Lights. Or they can head there during the week for events including Yoga on The Lawn, movie nights, festivals like Kidchella or Oktoberwest, and the annual pro bull riding event. Further into West Fargo proper, the annual Red River Valley Fair is a regular draw, with food, games and national musical acts.

Flooding and fishing
While the diversion projects have lessened the likelihood of the Sheyenne River flooding, the neighborhood still sits in the floodplain. Streets in the northwestern corner and on the eastern edge may sometimes have to deal with standing water in the streets. Poonam Budhiraja, Realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Advantage One, mentions that fishing is one of the biggest pastimes for Fargoans, and locals fish the Sheyenne near the box culverts along 32nd Avenue for bait fish like minnow, dace and shiner. Thrillseekers may be able to hunt down a channel catfish if they’re lucky.
