Westport Beach
Neighborhood in West Fargo, North Dakota
Cass County 58078
Simple bi-level and rambler homes
The twin and single-family homes of Westport Beach mix modern Craftsman and traditional design elements. Vinyl siding provides durability for Fargo's harsh winters and properties are often accented with natural stone. Oversized two-stall garages are standard with space for snow removal equipment, while some single-family homes get a third bay for bikes, snow machines, boats and other recreational vehicles. Most homes sit on a fifth-of-an-acre with fenced-in backyards and short, straight driveways leading out to the quiet streets. Twin homes generally sell for between $225,000 and $325,000, while single-family homes can go for between $300,000 and $450,000–although those homes with four-stall garages have sold for as high as $625,000.Cars are a must for Westport Beach residents
Aside from walking or biking for recreation, Westport Beach residents rely on their vehicles to get around. While Fargo has the MATBUS system, it doesn’t service the neighborhood. As one of the most distant Fargo suburbs, the 10-mile drive to Downtown Fargo takes around 20 minutes, although the heart of West Fargo is only 5 miles north and takes around 10 minutes to drive to/from. Residents catching a flight head to Hector International Airport, 11 miles away, which takes 15 to 20 minutes by car. The closest 24-hour emergency care center, Sanford Medical Center, is 4 miles away and generally less than a 10-minute drive. It’s also one of the area’s largest employers and serves the tri-state region.A brand new high school in Horace
Students who attend West Fargo Public Schools will start out at Legacy Elementary School, which gets an A-minus from Niche, before moving up to Heritage Middle School, which gets a B-plus grade. West Fargo Horace High School, which opened for the 2021-2022 school year, is not yet rated. The high school features a 'building trades class' where students annually build a home as part of a class project and then sell it. Private school options here include the Oak Grove Lutheran School system and the St. John Paul II Catholic Schools system, both of which offer programs from kindergarten through Grade 12.Shopping and dining just up Sheyenne
Residents don’t have too far to go for date night drinks and dining or a family meal, says Wall. “If you head to Sheyenne Street and go north, you’ll find Top Shelf Tavern, a bar with a wide array of drink options.” Tati’s Mediterranean Saveur offers Mediterranean flavors focusing on Lebanese cuisine, while Bar Down features bar and grille fare with a dining room that opens up to the plaza in the center of The Lights, a mixed-use commercial and shopping area. Families can sit down for breakfast at Randy’s Diner Too, a Fargo staple, while Hooligans and Traditions both offer menus from early breakfasts to late-night brews and bites. Hornbacher’s is the closest grocery store, just under 3 miles away on 40th Avenue South. Mogard points out a hidden gem nearby–“The Fargo Antiques & Repurposed Market is the most unique shop in the area; just head down East 52nd Avenue!” With dozens of antique vendors under one roof, items for sale represent generations of Fargo’s history.Classic cars and bucking bulls
Many residents head up to West Fargo for events throughout the year. “Cruise Night in West Fargo is a major hotspot to meet people and check out classic cars. It’s an excellent way to get out on those summer nights and enjoy the weather," says Wall. He also notes that the Red River Valley Fair in the northern end of West Fargo is one of the year's largest events, with rides, games and more across the end of June and early July. Closer to the neighborhood, The Lights offers everything from family-friendly musical acts to weekly yoga sessions in warmer weather and is also home to a professional bull riding ring. Mike Amundson, the Executive Director of West Fargo Events, says the latter has a special place in the heart of North Dakotans, who embrace traditional western sports–indeed, from June through August, there are almost 30 rodeo events held across the state.A trio of parks connected by a path
Wall notes that while Westport Beach doesn’t have a beach or a park within the community, it’s close to three of West Fargo’s many parks. The Wilds provides a playground and open field; to the south, Dakota Park has a playground, a picnic shelter and an ice rink that doubles as pickleball courts in the summer. “Rendezvous Park is just north of the neighborhood,” says Wall, “It’s one of the nicest parks in the city of West Fargo.” In addition to a pond complete with a waterfall, there is a skatepark, a disc golf course, a skating rink, fields for soccer and football, and six baseball and softball fields. A dedicated biking and walking path that winds through the communities connects all three parks.Sheyenne River flooding
The southwest of Fargo remained undeveloped for a long period due to flooding concerns. The Horace Diversion for the Sheyenne River helped alleviate some of this–and the diversion runs along the neighborhood's western border. There are still flooding issues, but the Fargo-Moorhead Diversion Project is expected to be completed in 2027. This will move the neighborhood into FEMA’s 500-year floodplain, removing the flooding threat and the requirement for flood insurance.
