Peaceful, suburban neighborhood along the Sheyenne River
Just under 7 miles from Downtown Fargo, Westwood is a suburban community that offers proximity to parks along the Sheyenne River and convenient access to some of West Fargo's most unique shopping and dining. "Westwood is in the older part of town up north here, so residents have great access to locally-owned places with a lot more character, as well as more chains just 3 miles south along Interstate 94," says Tammie Gerbet, a local property manager at Westbrook Apartment Complex. Although the West Fargo area has seen an explosion of growth in the last 10 to 15 years, Westwood's residents also benefit from their comparatively serene, natural setting by the Sheyenne River. In addition to its abundance of greenspace, Westwood's community is also anchored by local organizations like Living Hope Baptist Church, which opens its doors and lawn to the community every Fourth of July. "We hand out pops and popcorn and have games for people to play- it's really cool to see the 360-degree view of fireworks flying up from all the surrounding homes," says pastor Tanner Olson. In the midst of a quickly growing area, Westwood offers a peaceful, suburban atmosphere where a diverse community can come together.

Diverse West Fargo homes at affordable prices
Contoured by the shallow waters of the Sheyenne River, life in Westwood is set against the backdrop of a lush canopy of oaks and pines along the waterway. Many homes here also feature front yard landscaping and trees that also provide gentle shade. With most homes in the neighborhood being built in the early 1960s, Westwood is a mix of traditional suburban styles like split-levels and ramblers, as well as a handful of more modern builds that feature large windows, space-age roofs or decorative brick chimneys. Connected to attached garages on the side of homes or detached ones in the rear, short driveways in the neighborhood keep parking convenient, though they may feel much longer when clearing them of North Dakota's annual winter snows. The average sales price of Westwood is also just $275,000, which is about $110,000 dollars less than the greater Fargo area. In terms of price, Westwood homes range from the low $200,00s to the high $300,000s depending on size and condition. For example, a smaller three-bedroom ranch-style with 1,000 square feet of space can sell for around $210,000 dollars, while a larger four-bedroom home with a 3,000 square footprint can sell for up to $370,000 dollars.

Take a stroll through Elmwood Park
Another great resource for the Westwood community is its access to local parks within walking distance. One of the largest parks in the area, Elmwood Park, is located right in the neighborhood along the Sheyenne River. Whether getting together for a barbecue with family and friends or just taking the dog out for a walk, Elmwood Park's multi-acre expanse of open green space is invaluable for nearby residents. In addition to its expansive playground-- beloved by local kids for its merry-go-round, zip-line and climbing structures-- Elmwood also features a baseball diamond and courts for sand volleyball and basketball. Right next door, the Exchange Club Field offers an alternative for playing baseball or dodgeball as well as a skate park and batting cages where people can hone their skills. Just beyond Westwood's boundaries, folks will also find plenty of open space at the West Fargo Soccer Complex. In addition to local families and kids playing at the park, this collection of multi-sized fields is also a gathering place for youth soccer leagues throughout the area.

Getting around the greater Fargo area
"For someone moving here, it's important to understand that even though the tri-city area seems pretty big on a map, it's actually pretty easy to get around," says Olson, adding that he commutes to/from West Fargo every day from Moorhead and it takes less than 20 minutes to get from one end of town to the other. While there isn't much public transportation in the area, residents can reach downtown via car in less than 7 miles via Main Avenue. For healthcare needs, the Sanford Medical Center is just over 3 miles south off of 23rd Avenue; and for those traveling out of state, Hector International Airport is also about 7 miles away, just north of downtown Fargo.
