A storied West Haven village with a growing student population
While most of West Haven hasn’t seen much new development, the village of Allingtown is a notable exception. In recent years, the growing University of New Haven Campus and expanding student population have spurred new businesses, apartments and homes in Allingtown. “The school has bought a lot of property and homes around it. They have knocked some homes down to expand the campus and turned some buildings into offices, just like how Yale did back in the day,” says Wayne Hugendubel, Realtor at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage and West Haven native.
Immediately bordering New Haven, Allingtown has a long history. Originally home to the Quinnipiac tribe, the village was home to English settlers in its early years and even experienced a British invasion during the Revolutionary War. Throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries, Allingtown was largely populated by European immigrants working in local factories. But today, Allingtown is dominated by university students – though, they still live alongside many long-term residents.
The University of New Haven continues to grow in West Haven
The University of New Haven in Allingtown enrolls over 9,200 students. According to the university’s website, the class of 2028 has students from 16 countries and 41 states. “They’ve gotten a lot of grants, so the campus is expanding. It’s constantly growing,” says Jason Murphy, owner of Estate House Coffee in West Haven.
For younger students living in the neighborhood, Forest Elementary School has a C-plus from Niche. All public school students in the town continue to C-plus-rated May V. Carrigan Intermediate School, B-minus-rated Harry M. Bailey Middle School and B-minus-rated West Haven High School. West Haven High School has about 1,800 students and finished a $130 million renovation in 2021.
The University of New Haven makes up a large hub of Allingtown.
Forest Elementary School serves students in pre-K through 5th grade.

Houses built throughout the 20th century and new high-density developments
Home styles in Allingtown include traditional properties built in the early 1900s, ranches built in the 1950s and, more rarely, contemporary builds from the 2020s. “In the Center District and Allingtown, 1900 to 1940 was a big time for [building] housing,” Hugendubel says. Houses usually sell for between $200,000 and $500,000. Additionally, new, mixed-use apartment complexes near campus, such as The Atwood and Park View, have recently added more density in Allingtown.

There are several restaurants in Allingtown within walking distance of the university campus. Spice Venue is a casual Indian establishment off Boston Post Road, and across the street, Fruitopia West Haven has decadent ice cream cones, smoothies and bubble tea. “They have a lot of stores that cater to international students, and they’ve developed it with apartments, walk-in [medical] facilities and burger restaurants for college kids,” Hugendubel says. For groceries, Stop & Shop is about 2 miles south of campus. Students and other Allingtown residents are within walking distance of the VA hospital off Campbell Avenue, and Yale New Haven Hospital is 2 miles east.

Unwind at the Maltby Lakes or along the Long Island Sound
On the northern side of the neighborhood, Maltby Lakes has nearly 700 acres of preserved natural land to enjoy. Visitors can mountain bike or hike through miles of forested trails and along several ponds. About 2 miles south of Allingtown, West Haven has several public beach accesses, where locals lay out on the sand, swim or walk along the water. Savin Rock Park and other adjoining waterfront parks have paved pathways, bocce ball courts and other athletic facilities. Each year in July, West Haven comes together for the Savin Rock Festival, which has carnival rides, games and entertainment honoring the amusement park that once operated at the site.
The Yale Bowl and other Yale sports facilities just border Allingtown on the north. Residents can come out to support the Yale Bulldogs at big events like the annual Harvard vs. Yale football faceoff.

Walkable to UNH and trains to NYC
Allingtown borders New Haven and is less than 2 miles from Yale University. Drivers can take Route 1 into downtown New Haven in about 10 minutes or take CTtransit buses. Many students at the University of New Haven may opt out of owning a car, thanks to walkability and public transit options. “The parking around campus is really difficult, and it’s the same thing around the VA hospital. Parking around the VA hospital is almost impossible,” Hugendubel says. Riders can also get 80 miles southwest to New York City on the New Haven Line from the New Haven or West Haven train stations. Tweed New Haven Airport is 6 miles east.
