Shorefront living in a suburb with changing demographics
Along the shoreline of the Long Island Sound, West Haven Center is a diverse, suburban neighborhood just outside New Haven, Connecticut. Wayne Hugendubel, Realtor at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, recalls growing up in the area when it was largely industrial: “It was all post-war families. All the fathers worked at different factories. Armstrong Rubber Company was huge, Winchester in New Haven, factories in Shelton and Derby,” he says. As most of the region’s manufacturing left by the end of the 20th century, West Haven adapted to changing times. The neighborhood now offers easy commuter access along the state’s southern shore to New York City from the town’s train station, direct access to waterfront recreation and a small downtown area lined with local restaurants serving food from around the world. “The demographics have changed tremendously over the last 15 years,” Hugendubel says.
Local restaurants along Campbell Avenue cater to diverse tastes
West Haven Center’s small downtown strip is along Campbell Avenue and within walking distance for many residents. The road is lined with local restaurants, salons and international grocers. “As you go throughout the town, you have a lot of Peruvian, Turkish, Colombian, Spanish, Ecuadorian places. And we also have great Italian restaurants and Irish pubs. We’ve got a lot of great restaurants here,” Hugendubel says. He recommends Jerri's Luncheonette, a diner that serves standard American breakfast fare alongside Latin American dishes like mojarra frita and mondongo. “This used to be just your typical American diner, but the new owner took it over, and it’s all Colombian now. It’s awesome,” he says. West Haven Center also has waterfront dining at restaurants like Stowe’s Seafood, a pirate-themed establishment serving fresh-caught fish. Stop & Shop off Elm Street serves weekly food needs.

Recreation on the Long Island Sound at Savin Rock Park
Locals walk along the sparkling waterfront, fly kites and dip their toes in the deep blue water at Savin Rock Park and adjoining Bradley Point Park. Parents pushing strollers, dogwalkers and runners enjoy the parks’ paved, beachfront paths. Each year in July, the Savin Rock Festival lights up the shore with carnival rides, concerts and food trucks. Just down the road and along the water, Sandy Point Bird Sanctuary is a good spot for catching a glimpse at species like Blue Herons and Piping Plovers.
Some properties along the coastline and branching off Old Field Creek in West Haven Center are at risk of coastal flooding. However, the city has invested in elevating some streets, acquiring vulnerable properties through an easement program and dredging Old Field Creek to reduce flooding risk in the neighborhood. Additionally, West Haven’s water treatment plant is just next to Sandy Point Bird Sanctuary, but Hugendubel says odors from the facility aren’t an issue for nearby residents.
