Waterfront condos and hundred-year-old traditional homes
Most homes in West Haven Center are traditional styles built in the early decades of the 20th century. These single- and multi-family properties on gridded streets have pitched roofs, small windows and exterior details like satellite dishes, American flags and shrubbery that give the neighborhood a lived-in appearance. Most homes sell for between $250,00 and $450,000. Condo units built between the 1960s and ‘80s near the neighborhood’s waterfront typically sell for between $150,000 and $350,000, though modern condos built in the 2020s sell for more.Recreation on the Long Island Sound at Savin Rock Park
Locals walk along the sparkling waterfront, fly kites and dip their toes in the deep blue water at Savin Rock Park and adjoining Bradley Point Park. Parents pushing strollers, dogwalkers and runners enjoy the parks’ paved, beachfront paths. Each year in July, the Savin Rock Festival lights up the shore with carnival rides, concerts and food trucks. Just down the road and along the water, Sandy Point Bird Sanctuary is a good spot for catching a glimpse at species like Blue Herons and Piping Plovers. Some properties along the coastline and branching off Old Field Creek in West Haven Center are at risk of coastal flooding. However, the city has invested in elevating some streets, acquiring vulnerable properties through an easement program and dredging Old Field Creek to reduce flooding risk in the neighborhood. Additionally, West Haven’s water treatment plant is just next to Sandy Point Bird Sanctuary, but Hugendubel says odors from the facility aren’t an issue for nearby residents.
A new building for Washington Elementary School
Washington Elementary School, whose original building was constructed in 1909, is being rebuilt. The new building is expected to open in the fall of 2025. In the meantime, students may attend the neighborhood's Savin Rock Community School, which serves kindergarten through fourth grade and earns a B-minus grade from Niche. Students continue to C-plus-rated May V. Carrigan Intermediate School, B-minus-rated Harry M. Bailey Middle School and B-minus-rated West Haven High School. The University of New Haven, a private institution with nearly 10,000 students, is just north of West Haven Center. The West Haven Green hosts cultural events
Next to the West Haven City Hall, the West Haven Green hosts community events throughout the year that bring the town’s diverse community together. These include the annual Apple Festival in September, the Italian Heritage Celebration in October and more seasonal celebrations including Christmas tree lighting and Hanukkah menorah lighting ceremonies.Taking the New Haven Line through Fairfield County
West Haven’s train station opened in 2013 and is in the neighborhood. From the station, commuters can ride on the New Haven Line along Connecticut’s coast into New York City, about 80 miles southwest. The train also stops at several Fairfield County cities, including Bridgeport, Stamford and Greenwich. Interstate 95 also borders the neighborhood and takes drivers into New York City and just east to New Haven. Tweed New Haven Airport is 8 miles east, and Yale New Haven Hospital is 3 miles away. West Haven’s VA hospital is also just outside of West Haven Center.Local restaurants along Campbell Avenue cater to diverse tastes
West Haven Center’s small downtown strip is along Campbell Avenue and within walking distance for many residents. The road is lined with local restaurants, salons and international grocers. “As you go throughout the town, you have a lot of Peruvian, Turkish, Colombian, Spanish, Ecuadorian places. And we also have great Italian restaurants and Irish pubs. We’ve got a lot of great restaurants here,” Hugendubel says. He recommends Jerri's Luncheonette, a diner that serves standard American breakfast fare alongside Latin American dishes like mojarra frita and mondongo. “This used to be just your typical American diner, but the new owner took it over, and it’s all Colombian now. It’s awesome,” he says. West Haven Center also has waterfront dining at restaurants like Stowe’s Seafood, a pirate-themed establishment serving fresh-caught fish. Stop & Shop off Elm Street serves weekly food needs.
