“Half as much” for charming homes
The median year built for properties in West Homestead is 1930, so homebuyers can find residences built as early as 1899 and as late as the tail-end of the 1970s. Century-old Victorians and American Foursquares are primarily found on the borough’s northwest side, closer to the commercial areas on smaller lots. Multifamily properties are more popular as well on that end, often comprising large, boxy brick-faced buildings that have been divided up into units. The borough’s southeast side, branching off Fieldstone Drive, is home to midcentury charm that echoes through raised ranch-style homes, Colonial Revivals and bungalows. Driveways are also standard on this end of West Homestead. Overall list prices range from $37,000 to $263,000. “In general, in Pittsburgh, you got higher price neighborhoods,” says Kim Stotlemyer, a local Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “Like average sales for single-family are around $200,000 to $250,000. Over here, just outside the city, you could be paying half as much and still get a very nice home.”
Many homes here sit atop hills and have long stairways to the front porch.

Sandcastle Water Park
In the summertime, Sandcastle Water Park is the place to be, and the view of the Monongahela River from the top of one of its tube slides is one of the best in the neighborhood. Folks can swim in the wave pool, dive into swimming pools or just float down the lazy river. West Homestead also features Calhoun Park, a year-round green space with picnic tables, swings and a ball field. Additionally, there are avenues for hiking and biking around the neighborhood. “The Great Allegheny Passage runs through West Homestead, Homestead and Munhall,” Stotlemyer says. “It’s part of a route that runs between Pittsburgh and Washington D.C., I think. It’s popular for hikers and bikers.” The Great Allegheny Passage is a 150-mile trail that runs from Pittsburgh, PA, to Cumberland, MD, where the adjoining C&O Canal Towpath allows bicyclists to extend their ride to D.C.

This spot is a popular lunch and dinner hub thanks to its custom-creation menu, which lets folks build their dream burgers. Local moviegoers flock to the AMC Waterfront 22 for the latest flicks. The neighborhood's diverse restaurant options include Babylon Restaurant and Bar, a family-owned Mediterranean eatery. There are also popular spots like the Primanti Brothers Restaurant and Bar. “It’s a local chain that Pittsburghers flock to,” Chupinka says. The Waterfront is a large mall complex on the Monongahela River with more food and retail choices like TJ Maxx and Target. “People go to the Waterfront for shops and restaurants. There’s a lot of convenience with everything it has to offer,” says Erin Musciano, a Realtor at Realty ONE Group Gold Standard, who has been selling homes in the area for nearly a decade. At Burgatory, diners can build their burger in a casual, hip atmosphere. For groceries, people visit Shop n’ Save on Buttermilk Hollow Road.

People often view the Golden Triangle on the Duquesne Incline or try out a new restaurant in Market Square. “I’m a hockey fan, so the Penguins game is where I go,” says Chupinka. People head to PPG Paints Arena for sports games and concerts. Nightlife spots can be found downtown at spots like The Yard, which has a DIY Bloody Mary bar or the Space Bar, which is next door. For outdoor adventure, Pittsburgh hallmark Kennywood, is an amusement park with rollercoasters.
