In 1912, Louis Dudley Shoenberg built a farm in Westminster to supply a nearby tuberculosis sanitarium with produce, dairy and poultry. The 70-acre plot has since transformed into a residential enclave called Shoenberg Farms with a shopping center under the same moniker. The silo and barn still stand, lending to its designation on the National Register of Historic Places. While you can’t enter these structures, they make for a scenic stroll. “This neighborhood has a great network of sidewalks, and everyone uses those when it's nice out,” says Claire Gilmore, the owner-broker of Houses by Claire Gilmore, who has sold homes in Westminster for over 30 years. “There are some lovely open spaces, too. It’s an incredibly well-thought-out community.”
The southern part of Shoenberg Farms has rows of 1970s dwellings with four bedrooms and two-car garages. These houses have contemporary-style facades with low-sloping or asymmetrical roofs. They typically cost between $400,000 and $550,000, a range similar to a Westminster home’s average $550,000 selling price. The northern region of the neighborhood is brimming with homes built throughout the last decade. The most prominent style is a New Traditional Craftsman with a small front porch and three bedrooms. “These houses are super charming. You wouldn’t think they’re new construction,” says Gilmore. “Lawn care and snow removal are both taken care of by the Homeowner’s Association, so there’s also a low maintenance aspect to the area.” Expect to pay between $600,000 and $700,000 to live in one of these newer builds.
The northern part of the neighborhood also has a few pocket parks, like the playground on Chase Street or the shady picnic spot on Ames Court. Residents can also walk to 18-acre Faversham Park to relax by the lake or fish for bluegill from the dock. You can also run around the playground, shoot hoops on the basketball court and hit a home run on the baseball diamonds. The public Indian Tree Golf Club is a 2-mile drive from the neighborhood. It offers an 18-hole course and a 9-hole course, which both have Kentucky bluegrass fairways and panoramic mountain views. Head to the City Park Recreation Center, about 4 miles away, for indoor activity. Speed through the four-lane lap pool, float down the lazy river or jump off the rope swing into the recreation pool. There’s also a weight room and a full-sized gym perfect for racquetball.
Children in Shoenberg Farms attend Swanson Elementary, which has an overall C grade on Niche. Then, they may go to North Arvada Middle School. In addition to its overall B-minus grade on Niche, the school has a community garden allowing anyone in the area to rent a plot. Lastly, students can attend Arvada High School, which has a B-minus in college prep from Niche. The academic pathway program allows students to study a career field and gain real-world work experience. Focuses include humanities, STEM and sports business.
Thanks to the Shoenberg Farms commercial corridor along Sheridan Boulevard, residents are just a quick walk away from breakfast at Denny’s or a coffee from Starbucks. You can even pick up groceries from the Walmart Supercenter. Locally owned restaurants are less than 1-mile away at the Hidden Lake Shopping Center. Stop by Faifo for authentic pho made with beef shank and bone marrow broth. Taqueria Las Palmas is another area favorite, serving Mexican classics like cheesy chicken enchiladas and steak burritos smothered in green chili sauce. Access more shopping options like Barnes & Noble or Ulta Beauty less than 4 miles away at the Westminster City Center, an open-air retail hub.
“The location along Sheridan Boulevard is incredibly sought after,” says Gilmore. “It makes getting to Denver incredibly fast, so this is also a good neighborhood for anyone who commutes to the city.” Sheridan Boulevard, formally known as Colorado State Highway 95, runs along Shoenberg Farms' eastern boundary. A 10-mile drive south on the thoroughfare leads to Dever. Eight Regional Transportation District bus stops are sprinkled across the neighborhood’s portion of West 72nd Avenue, furthering the neighborhood’s element of convenience.
