North Lakes is a gated community close to restaurants and parks

North Lakes provides a parade of palm trees and heaps of leisure. The Weston gated community is an amenity-heavy escape near the Everglades. Residents gain access to activities while remaining close to shops, restaurants, parks and larger cities. “It’s a pretty environment where people know their neighbors,” says Sandra Rathe, a broker associate with Keller Williams Legacy Weston. Rathe says the area tends to attract people who enjoy the outdoors. The community is served by highly rated schools, and Weston often hosts community events near the neighborhood.

Spanish and Mediterranean Revival homes give things a consistent look

The community is full of Spanish and Mediterranean Revival houses with orange and brown tile roofs and stucco exteriors. Homes with three or fewer bedrooms often go from $630,000 to $820,000. Properties with four or more bedrooms can range from $700,000 to $1.2 million. Rathe says the development wants everything to have a consistent look, which is why many homes have the same floor plans. HOA fees vary but are usually between $120 and $180 monthly and go toward neighborhood upkeep. Roads typically have sidewalks and are lined with various bushes and trees, including palm trees. Yards are grassy and can also feature palm trees and shrubs near the home. The neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.

Parks for sports and for recreation, plus a public golf course

North Lakes has a community swimming pool. Eagle Point Park, close to the neighborhood's gates, features baseball and softball diamonds, multi-purpose fields, a sand volleyball court and a play area. Dogs on leashes of 6 feet or shorter are allowed. To the west, Gator Run Park has a shaded playground and tree-lined walking paths, and Weston Regional Park is a youth and adult sports hub with a YMCA facility. A few miles south, Tequesta Trace Park sits next to St. Paul Lutheran Church & Preschool and has team sports facilities, including a football and soccer field with stadium seating. Bonaventure Golf Club, just over 3 miles away, takes public tee times for its 18-hole course, where the No. 3 hole features a waterfall. Rathe says the community often gathers at nearby Markham Park & Target Range for biking, boating, shooting and disc golf, among other activities. Dogs are welcome, and camping is allowed.

Get creative at Chalk in the Park or watch a July 4th fireworks show

Weston holds several events within a few miles of the neighborhood. Chalk in the Park encourages the community to cover the Library Park sidewalks in chalk art, with each year bringing a different theme. A DJ plays music while people draw, and snacks are available for purchase. The Weston Foreign Film Series brings international movies to AMC Weston 8. The Hometown Fireworks Celebration is held close to the 4th of July at Weston Regional Park and includes live music, games and photo stations.

Restaurants like Ceviche Arigato bring an international flavor

Several restaurants sit within a few miles of the neighborhood, including Ceviche Arigato, which serves a fusion of Peruvian and Japanese cuisine. Tarantella serves Italian pasta, seafood and pizza. Japan Inn is a hibachi-style grill and a “fun family place to go,” Rathe says. “You watch them cook the food [at your table].” Graziano’s Mercado Weston is an Argentine restaurant and market, with a bakery and a butcher. The area is close to a Publix and a CVS.

Cypress Bay High offers The Cambridge Program and gets an A-plus grade

Students are zoned for Broward County Public Schools. Eagle Point Elementary School sits near the community entrance, and many students walk there; it holds an A Niche grade. Tequesta Trace Middle School gets an A-minus score. Cypress Bay High School offers The Cambridge Program, where students take Advanced International Certificate of Education classes. A Cambridge diploma guarantees a Florida Academic Scholarship through the Bright Futures program. The school earns an A-plus rating.

Florida has controlled open enrollment, allowing students to attend any public school that is not at capacity. The state’s Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program creates an education savings account for eligible families who receive money for private school tuition and other expenses. The American Heritage Schools’ Broward Campus, around 7 miles east, holds an A-plus grade. Rathe says the area’s schools let every student find what they are looking for, whether “a star football player or a theater kid.”

Close to Alligator Alley and Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital

Interstate 75, known locally as Alligator Alley, runs north of the residential community. Downtown Miami is around 40 miles away, as is Miami International Airport. The Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital is roughly an 8-mile drive. Rathe says I-75 can get backed up occasionally, but it is nothing like traffic in larger cities. “When you’re in Miami, it’s like, ‘Wow, Weston is great.’” Rathe says the area is at risk of hurricanes, as is all of Florida. Homes often have impact windows or accordion-style shutters designed to prevent significant damage.
