Lush landscaping and winding lakes define The Islands
The Islands is a collection of small, gated communities in the heart of South Florida's Weston, just east of the Everglades. The neighborhood's meticulously arranged greenery adorns residential streets and fills modest lots, while quaint winding lakes offer backyard vistas. The community draws many buyers for its top-rated schools and well-maintained parks. "I would consider it a hotspot for family-oriented populations," says Realtor Ramona Bautista, team lead at The Keyes Company. She's lived and sold homes in Weston for over two decades. "One of the highlights is that you can walk your kids to the school or the park." She adds that residents take the time to get to know one another and are involved in the community. "They have a community chat where people connect and exchange ideas. It's very connected." The CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, the lowest possible rating.
Waterfront homes and evening walks
Much of The Islands is divided into small subsections nearly surrounded by water, hence the name. Homes overlooking the water are common, and Bautista says they're arguably the most desired in the area. She adds that the community's location near the Everglades prompts an occasional alligator sighting. "There's always a possibility you'll have a friendly alligator saying hi to you," Bautista says. "People ask me, 'What will you do if one comes up to you?' and I say, 'I will say hello and offer it coffee.'" Homes have Mediterranean and Spanish influences and typically feature four to five bedrooms. They can list anywhere from $700,000 to $1.65 million. Every street has palm trees and sidewalks, and folks enjoy evening walks. A couple of HOAs serve the neighborhood.
Local schools earn high remarks on Niche
Broward County Public Schools scores an overall B-plus on Niche and serves over $250,000 students. Indian Trace Elementary School and Country Isle Elementary both receive an A-minus. Tequesta Trace Middle School has an A-minus, and Cypress Bay High School scores an A-plus. The high school offers many career and technical education programs, including engineering, digital video and early childhood education. Students can choose to attend any school in the district, and the School Choice Open Enrollment window is typically from early November to December.
Outdoor fun includes tennis, basketball and skateboarding
The community offers several outdoor amenities, including the basketball court and playground off Camellia Drive. Another community playground sits along Palm Boulevard, surrounded by plenty of green space and a paved walking path. Residents also enjoy the public tennis court at the corner of Bayside Lane and Crescent Way. Tequesta Trace Park, one of Weston's most popular parks, is within walking distance of many houses. It features baseball fields, a skate park and a playground for the kids. It also has two large turf fields often used by local leagues. Indian Trace Park offers basketball courts and a few grassy sports facilities nearby. The Club at Weston Hills provides two 18-hole courses to its members.
Weston Town Center offers local eats and everyday essentials
Weston Town Center is the city's primary commercial hub just south of The Islands. It's a vibrant collection of pastel-splashed buildings and towering royal palms, often busy with people enjoying a meal. Over a dozen locally owned restaurants offer international plates, including Korean fried chicken from Krispy Kitchen and Ecuadorian pan de yuca from Naturissimo. Town Center also features a Publix, where locals primarily grocery shop. There's also a Publix near the north end of The Islands, along with a CVS, a gas station and a bank. Locals head out of Weston for big-box shopping. About 10 miles away, Sawgrass Mills is a large mall with stores like Target and Marshalls.
Biking is popular in this well-connected, car-friendly area
Residents often navigate the community by bike. "It's very bike-friendly," Bautista says. "Last night I biked to Home Depot, and it was almost 9 o'clock, and there were probably 50 or 60 bike riders." Residents rely on cars for commutes out of the area. Interstate 75 runs along Weston's northern and eastern ends, and U.S. Route 27 is accessible just west. Weston Hospital of Cleveland Clinic Florida serves the community, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is around 22 miles east.
Potential storms in the area
Tropical storms and strong winds are common in South Florida, but Weston has a relatively low risk of flooding.
