A coveted beachfront community in Westport
According to longtime Westport resident Judy Michaelis, most Westport locals have at least considered moving to Compo. “Everyone wants to be at Compo Beach. People will sacrifice how much house they can get for their money,” says Michaelis, a broker with Coldwell Banker Realty who’s lived in the area for over 30 years. “I always say that if I didn’t care about my kids coming home to visit or having a garage, I, too, could move to Compo Beach.” Residents who exchange more storage and yard space for a cottage in the coastal neighborhood live near Westport's most popular recreational activities. In addition to the sandy shores of Compo Beach, the neighborhood is also next to the Westport Longshore Club. The public park has country club-style amenities, like an 18-hole golf course, swimming pools, tennis courts and a marina. "Compo is where everyone gravitates to, no matter where they live in Westport," says Leslie Clarke, a Realtor with Compass Connecticut and longtime Westport resident. She adds that the neighborhood leans into the active energy, creating a dynamic shoreline community on the Long Island Sound.
Residents spend time at Compo Beach year-round
Most of Compo’s outdoor activities revolve around the Long Island Sound. A skate park and playground accompany the sandy beach at Compo Beach, which is almost always filled with people. “Twelve months out of the year, you’ll see people on the beach,” Michaelis says. “Even in the winter, you’ll see people bundled up and walking their dogs since they’re allowed during the off-season.” Neighbors may swim at the beach or head to the Longshore Club Park, which has three swimming pools. Westport residents automatically belong to the municipal park, allowing them to golf on the 18-hole course, play tennis, take their kids to the playground, or sign up for sailing lessons through the sailing school. The slips at E.R. Strait Marina offer a convenient place for boaters to dock their watercraft after sailing around the Sound. In the winter, residents strap on ice skates to glide around the ice rink at Longshore Club.

Coastal estates and inland properties
In Compo, buyers find a mix of inland cottages and striking coastal estates. Proximity to the beach is a major appeal of the neighborhood, but there are some more wooded areas where houses come with about half an acre of land located north of Interstate 95. Smaller houses, like Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes from the mid-1900s, are priced between $800,000 and $1.4 million. Compo’s multi-million-dollar estates were built throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, and often appear in Cape Cod and colonial-inspired designs, with pristine landscaping and waterfront views. Prices for these start around $2 million and rise to around $8 million. Houses near the coast have a severe to extreme risk of flooding, according to RiskFactor, though the risk is minimal for inland properties.

Seafood restaurants and high-end shopping in Westport
True to its country-club atmosphere, the Westport Longshore Club has an upscale seafood restaurant called La Plage, where patrons can enjoy coastal views as they dine on oysters and lobster bisque. There aren’t any other restaurants in Compo, but there are many more on Post Road, just north of the neighborhood. Locals order brunch and sip on lattes at Terrain Café, an eatery in a plant store where the tables are surrounded by fresh greenery. For a range of sushi and noodle dishes, there’s Little Kitchen, an Asian fusion spot with a modern dining room. Grocery stores like Trader Joe’s and The Fresh Market, as well as popular retail options like Free People and Pottery Barn, are also on Post Road. Westport’s downtown area, which is about 2 miles west of Compo, has higher-end stores like Anthropologie and Tiffany & Co.

Community events at Compo Beach
Given that the shoreline is one of the most popular spots in town, many of Westport’s events are held at Compo Beach. The summer kick-off event in May has an obstacle course and face painting for kids, and people can order snacks from food trucks as they catch up with neighbors. “Our 4th of July event is huge," Clarke adds. "Thousands of people will come, arriving around 4 in the afternoon and staying until 11 or 12 at night." The community watches from the shore as fireworks are set off from a barge on the Long Island Sound, exploding over the water. Michaelis also notes that many philanthropic clubs will host benefits; the Westport Rotary Club organizes a lobster festival with seafood and music every September.

Nearby commuter rails and interstate access
Residential roads are calm enough for joggers and bikers to traverse the neighborhood, but most of the area is car-dependent. I-95 goes through Compo, offering drivers a convenient route 30 miles northeast to New Haven or 54 miles southwest to New York City. However, commuters headed to Manhattan usually take the train at the Westport train station, about 2 miles from Compo. Locals can leave their cars in the park-and-ride lot and board Metro-North Railroad’s New Haven line train station. The train usually takes 60 to 80 minutes to reach Grand Central Terminal.
