A former farming community that still emphasizes nature and greenery
With their pristinely landscaped lawns, Greens Farms’ multimillion-dollar coastal farmhouses look like they could be featured in a Martha Stewart show — probably because at least one of them has been. “When Martha Stewart lived in Westport, she lived on Turkey Hill Road in Greens Farms,” says Judy Michaelis, a broker with Coldwell Banker Realty who has lived in Westport for over 30 years. “She had a stunning property with gardens and that 19th-century house that she featured in her show, so that gives you an idea of the vibe of the neighborhood.” Though the large farms that earned the neighborhood its name don’t exist anymore, the peaceful community still has plenty of green space. Most houses have large grassy yards, and Connecticut's first state park, Sherwood Island State Park, sits along the coast.

Swimming, walking and fishing at Sherwood Island State Park
Sherwood Island State Park is the neighborhood’s hub for outdoor activities. The coastal park isn’t actually an island, but it is a popular place where beachgoers splash in the waves on the Long Island Sound or pick up seashells along the mile-long beach. Shells and small stones make the beaches a little rockier, so people won’t go barefoot as they swim or walk along the beach. Along with coastal activities like fishing and kayaking, the park also has an 18-hole disc-golf course and a model-airplane airfield where miniature aircraft take off from short, paved runways. Locals can also enjoy afternoon walks through marshes and forests on the park’s nature trails.
There’s also the H. Smith Richardson Wildlife Preserve, which is maintained by the Connecticut Audubon Society and has habitat restoration areas and pollinator meadows. Neighbors may explore its walking trails or go bird-watching in the forests. The preserve also has a pine tree farm where residents can chop down their own Christmas trees or browse a selection of pre-cut pines.

Smaller Colonial Revivals and striking farmhouse-inspired estates
Lush lawns and striking farmhouses are the neighborhood’s focal points, though the original farms aren't in the neighborhood anymore. “There’s still these beautiful rolling hills, and the neighborhood was developed earlier than other areas of Westport, so most lots are in 1- and 2-acre zoning areas,” Michaelis says. Gated condo communities in the northern part of the neighborhood have a shingled, coastal design. Units in buildings from the 1980s are priced between $1 million and $1.6 million. Mid-to-late 20th-century Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes usually cost between $1 million and $2.5 million, but prices increase significantly for the neighborhood’s luxurious estates. Selling prices for large farmhouses and colonial-inspired mansions fluctuate between $4 million and $10 million.

Bedford Middle School earns an A rating, while Staples High School scores an A-plus and is ranked by Niche as the best public high school in Connecticut. The high school has over 100 clubs and activities, including a school newspaper, a songwriting club, a garden club and a rock-climbing club. The neighborhood is also home to Greens Farms Academy, a private coeducational school serving prekindergarten through 12th-grade students. The academy receives an A-plus Niche grade.

Eateries, retail stores and supermarkets on Post Road
Post Road, Westport’s commercial corridor, runs north of Greens Farms, making it easy to complete a grocery run or grab a bite from a local restaurant. For Middle Eastern fare, diners can go to Layla’s Falafel, which serves falafel platters, freshly made hummus and chicken kabobs. Westfair Fish & Chips is a casual, cash-only seafood spot featuring lobster rolls and baskets of fish and chips. Cocktails and American comfort fare, like mac and cheese and burgers, are on the menu at Little Barn, a rustic restaurant with an indoor fireplace and a gambrel-style roof. For groceries, Post Road also has supermarkets like Stop & Shop and Balducci’s. Well-known retailers like Free People, Pottery Barn, Ulta Beauty and HomeGoods can also be found along the roadway.

A neighborhood train station and easy access to Interstate 95
Residents often drive as they run errands or commute to work, but Green Farms also has its own train station with a park-and-ride lot where commuters leave their cars before boarding the Metro-North Railroad’s New Haven line, which takes between 60 and 80 minutes to reach Grand Central Terminal. “It makes for an easy commute to New York City,” Michaelis says. “A lot of people can go from their house to the train station without hitting a traffic light.” Interstate 95 runs parallel to the railroad, offering a convenient route for drivers to travel throughout Fairfield County or northeast to New Haven, which is about 28 miles away. New York City is 55 miles southwest on the same interstate.
If they're staying in the neighborhood, most won't let the lack of sidewalks stop them from walking around. "Since it's mostly private residential roads, people will always be out on bike rides or walking their dogs," says Leslie Clarke, a Realtor with Compass Connecticut and longtime Westport resident.

Westport-wide events on Compo Beach
Greens Farms residents join their neighbors in other parts of Westport for community gatherings. “We have a farmers market every Thursday where you can find produce, artisanal bread, cheese, you name it,” Michaelis says. The year-round farmers market is held inside during the winter months, usually making the switch in November. Locals live about 3 miles from Compo Beach, one of the most popular beaches in town and the site of many seasonal events. Westport holds a kickoff to summer in May, complete with face painting, food trucks and a movie night. The ticketed Independence Day fireworks in early July are highly anticipated, with residents packed onto the beach to watch the display sparkle over the water.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
