Westport Village
High-end shops and modern restaurants downtown
Downtown Westport is the gathering point where neighbors go shopping or meet for dinner. “Our shopping is incredible for a town of our size,” Clarke says. “I rarely shop outside of Westport.” The walkable outdoor area has trendy retailers like Urban Outfitters, Madewell and Athleta intermixed with upscale shops like West Elm, Brooks Brothers and Tiffany & Co. Shoppers can also walk to pick up a latte and acai bowl from GG & Joe or a smoothie with a wrap from Green & Tonic. For dinner, there are elevated taverns that serve cocktails and American fare, like Walrus Alley and Spotted Horse Tavern. Pink Sumo serves sushi rolls in a peaceful, dimly lit environment, and Capuli Restaurant is an upscale Mediterranean spot.Riverside parks and coastal green spaces in Westport
Small green spaces are scattered throughout the riverside neighborhood. Residents walk with their pets to the public Winslow Park, which has a large off-leash area for dogs to frolic. The Saugatuck River is lined with small peninsulas, like Booler’s Point and Grace K. Salmon Park, where neighbors can have picnics and go fishing in the river. “People go kayaking and paddle boarding up and down the river,” Clarke says. Residents launch watercraft into the river at the nearby boat launch. Westport’s popular shoreline attractions, like the Westport Longshore Club Park, are about 3 miles south of the neighborhood. The Longshore Club, a public recreational area with country-club-style amenities, has a golf course, tennis courts and swimming pools. Nearby is Compo Beach, the town’s most popular spot to swim and relax on the Long Island Sound. Some enjoy the coastal activities year-round, but Westport Village also has indoor activities. There are frequent plays and concerts at the historic Westport Country Playhouse, a community theater in a renovated 19th-century tannery. The Westport Library also has programs like children’s story hour, chess club and holiday markets. “With the uptick in remote work, you’ll see a lot of people set up spaces in the library to work, too,” Clarke says.Condos and Colonial Revivals in Westport Village
There are a few condo buildings throughout the neighborhood, but most Westport Village residences are houses on quiet, curving streets. Residential roads are lined with Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods and farmhouse-inspired properties with garden landscaping and neat fences. Many of these properties were built between the late 20th and early 21st centuries and are priced between $1.6 million and $4 million, depending on their size. The neighborhood’s condos run the gamut from contemporary, vinyl-sided buildings to renovated brick buildings with modern additions. Condo prices start around $600,000 and rise to around $2 million for a newly renovated unit.Students attend the A-plus-rated Staples High School
Children may start at Saugatuck Elementary School, which scores an A-plus grade from Niche. They can progress to Bedford Middle School, which earns an A rating, and then Staples High School, which Niche calls the best public high school in Connecticut. The high school earns an A-plus rating and offers over 100 extracurricular clubs, including a coding club, females in finance, a graphic design club and a student newspaper.Weekly farmers markets and holiday parades
Many of Westport’s community events are in this neighborhood, including seasonal parades. “Our Memorial Day parade is big. Just about every kid in town will get to march with a float down Main Street,” Clarke says. In October, kids show off their costumes as they explore Main Street and collect candy during the Halloween parade. The community also frequently gathers on the lawn at the Levitt Pavilion, a riverside outdoor venue with free concerts throughout the summer. Nearby, local farmers and artisans set up booths on Thursdays for summer and fall farmers markets. The Westport farmers market is year-round, but vendors sell their wares indoors at Gilbertie's Herbs and Garden Center in the winter.A walkable downtown area and nearby train station for commuters
Sidewalks on roads around the shopping district make Westport Village somewhat walkable, though many end up driving to go out to eat or shop around Main Street. Close by, on Post Road, locals find bus stops serviced by the Greater Bridgeport Transit service; the Coastal Link route connects passengers southwest to Norwalk and northeast to Bridgeport. If they leave Westport for work, many take Interstate 95; commuters headed to New York City have a 50-mile drive southwest on the interstate. “A lot of people have a hybrid schedule, so they’ll take the train to New York City three days a week and get to enjoy a longer weekend in town,” Clarke says. The Westport train station is on the opposite side of the Saugatuck River, about 2 miles southeast of the neighborhood. Here, residents can board the New Haven line on the Metro-North Railroad, which takes between 70 and 90 minutes to reach Grand Central Terminal.
