From former farmland to resedntial neighborhood
Giffords Corner is a quiet area in South Westport, Massachusetts, surrounded by open fields, leafy trees and winding roads. In the past, the neighborhood served as an agricultural plot for dairy farmers, but by the mid-19th century, residential construction began, marking the beginning of what Giffords Corner would transform into today. "This area is part of what we call the farm coast," says Molly Armando, a Realtor specializing in the South Coast of New England. "It's really peaceful, and there's much more room and opportunities to connect with the outdoors." Popular destinations such as the Horseneck Beach State Reservation Campground, Demarest Llyod State Park and the DNRT trails are all less than 10 miles away. For shopping and dining, residents head to Main Road, a street full of local businesses ranging from high-end boutiques to cozy coffee shops. Homeowners in Giffords Corner are also close to several main roads, such as Route 88 and I-195, allowing for an easy commute to other cities. Overall, Armando says Giffords Croner is "a great place for people who want to be connected to big cities like Providence or Cape Cod but still have the ability to get away from the bustle and live a more secluded, peaceful life."
Fun at the Westport Fair
Nothing captures the town's farming roots as well as the Westport Fair. The fair hosts carnival games, local vendors, rides and a petting zoo each year, drawing in a huge crowd. "It's so much fun! It's like your classic fair experience; you've got kids running around with cotton candy in their hands and parents enjoying a drink during the live music performances," Armando exclaims. "The tractor pull is the most exciting event for most people; it can get pretty intense." The fair has a $5 entry fee and costs $15 for an all-you-can-eat barbecue.
Parks, beaches and trails to visit
On Westport Point, the Horseneck Beach State Reservation has several campsites, which are regularly reserved for weekend visits. Beachgoers enjoy taking a dip in the water or walking along the coast. East of the neighborhood is Devol Pond, a poplar location to fish or observe wildlife at. Hikers can take advantage of the DNRT (Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust), a series of trails that run along Horseneck Road. For more time outdoors, there's also the Demarest Lloyd State Park and the Mass Audubon's Allen Pond Wildlife Sanctuary.
Classic New England styles
Most houses were built between the 1940s and 1980s, resulting in a mix of housing styles. Some of the most commonly spotted architecture includes Cape Cods, bungalows and colonial-inspired homes. "It's very New England," Armando says. "Most are year-round residences, but if you move south, you'll find more vacation homes." Most properties feature green yards decorated by trees and come with driveways and garages. There are no sidewalks, but residents often bike or walk around the neighborhood due to how much space there is. Prices start at $535,000 for a two-bedroom and go up to $915,000 for a newly renovated four-bedroom home.
Attend school at newly renovated Westport High
The schools here fall within the Westport Community Schools District. Westport Elementary, with a student-teacher ratio of 14:1, enrolls over 450 students and earns a B-minus overall from Niche. Students in Grades 5-12 attend Westport Senior High, which combines its middle and high school students. Westport High recently underwent a $96 million renovation in 2021, resulting in brand-new amenities like a media center, maker space and TV studio. It also receives a B-minus from Niche.
Catching up at Bittersweet Farm Restaurant and Tavern
Local businesses line Main Road, the local hub for shopping. Bittersweet Farm Restaurant and Tavern, locally known as "the farm," serves New American dishes like BBQ nachos. Residents frequently come here to catch up over a meal or stop by for drinks after work. Wild Honey Café is another spot where neighbors meet up. Residents head to Harry's Country Store or Lee's Market to pick up groceries. "Lee's is great," Armando says. "They support local vendors, so it feels like you're giving back to the community when you shop there."
Travel to Providence or Cape Cod
Since no public transportation options are nearby, residents rely on cars to get around. However, Interstate 195 is nearby, north of the neighborhood. I-195 takes residents to nearby major cities, such as Providence and Cape Cod. Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport is a 31-mile drive away.
Crime
According to the CAP Index, Giffords Corner's crime score is 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. This means crime rates as a whole here are well below the average in the U.S.
