Country and coastal living in South Westport
These days, South Westport is known as a sleepy town in Massachusetts, but its history dates back to when it was a harbor for maritime trade in the late 18th century. Although fishing and whaling are no longer the main industries, the town's coastal origins are evident in Westport Point, home to several marinas and beaches. The scenery changes when moving up towards Hix Bridge. The drive reveals winding roads and open fields, offering more of a countryside atmosphere. "South Westport is probably one of the only places in Mass that blends the sea and farmland this nicely," says Molly Armando, a local and Realtor specializing in the South Coast. "Because of this mix, there's a bunch of amazing opportunities for outdoor recreation, like the beaches and parks." One of these places is well-known Horseneck Beach. Shopping and dining options line Main Road, which has everything from restaurants to local boutiques. For more amenities, residents can easily take Interstate 195 into Providence, R.I. "You get to live this peaceful, secluded life, but you can also head into the city when you feel like it," Armando says.

Spend the day at Horseneck Beach
One of South Westport's best qualities is its numerous parks, trails and beaches. Armando notes one of the most popular destinations is Horseneck Beach, located in Westport Point. "I came here for the first time back in college because a friend of mine lived here, and she visited the place almost every summer," she says. "The best part is that it's open to the public, so you just pay for a day pass and enjoy the rest of your time there." Visitors enjoy splashing around in the water or walking along the coastline. There are also lifeguards, restrooms and showers. Hikers can take advantage of the DNRT (Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust), a series of trails that run along Horseneck Road. For more time in the great outdoors, there's also Demarest Lloyd State Park and Mass Audubon's Allen Pond Wildlife Sanctuary.

A mix of New England architecture
There's a mix of housing styles in South Westport, but the most common are Cape Cods and colonial-inspired homes. "It's mostly just Capes and colonials, your classic New England architecture," says Armando. "There are some historic homes, especially down by Westport Point — those have special covenants, but there's also some newer construction happening too." Most properties have larger lot sizes due to being in a more rural location, while those overlooking the coast have smaller lots. Armando: "Many of these homes, especially ones in The Point, are for people' summering.'" Prices start at $550,000 and go up as high as $ 3 million for properties by the water.

Shopping & dining at Main Road
Day-to-day shopping and dining options are located alongside Main Road, which houses local eateries, boutiques and coffee shops. According to Armando, Lee's Market is the go-to for groceries. "They source a lot of their products from locals in the area, so when you shop there, it feels like you're giving back to the community. They have delicious pre-made foods, too!" She has two "must-try" seafood restaurants: The Bayside Restaurant and The Back Eddy. "Bayside is one of my favorite places to grab dinner, and it's been around for a long time," Armando says. "The Back Eddy is more formal; you'd go there for a special occasion." She adds that The Back Eddy has live music and a dock, so "you can show up in your boat to eat."
