A little waterfront community in Grays Harbor County
On a peaceful beach in the South Bay, gentle waves lap at the shore, while bald eagles soar above pine trees. This scene unfolds every day in Bay City, a small neighborhood of Ocosta commonly mistaken as part of Aberdeen. “It’s just a little tiny circle there on the other side of the bridge. It’s now serviced by Aberdeen post office, so people get a little confused since they have Aberdeen zip codes,” says broker Jennifer Custer who works with Windermere Real Estate Westport and has over a decade of experience in the area. The tiny community in Grays Harbor County has proximity to a scenic beachfront state park and many homes on the water. But the community doesn’t have much else — Bay City residents must travel 5 miles east to Westport for retail, and many commute 15 miles east to work in Aberdeen.

Bottle Beach State Park and Twin Harbors State Park
Bottle Beach State Park is on the South Bay instead of the Pacific Ocean, which means it’s a calmer beach than many others in the area. Less cold and windy, the park has a beach better suited for swimming than the ocean. Over a hundred species of birds pass through the area, making its boardwalk trail a popular bird watching spot for bald eagles and herons. Dogs are only allowed from November through February to avoid scaring birds in the spring and summer months. At Twin Harbors State Park, there are campsites for cabins and RVs secluded in the woods, where people can walk along trails that lead to grass-covered sand dunes. Visitors with four-wheel drives can drive and park on the sand. Since its by one of the largest razor clam beds in the Pacific Northwest, many parkgoers go clam digging on the beach.

Twin Harbors is a calming space for Bay City residents to spend time.

Many homes on the South Bay
Secluded from tourists going to the ocean beaches, Bay City has some larger lots studded with evergreens, but it’s not the countryside. “I wouldn’t say it’s rural — I'd call it a neighborhood. There are a lot of houses along the water,” Custer says. The area’s main subdivision has a handful of traffic-free roads, where people can stroll to the bay. The architectural styles include ranch-style homes, cottages, log cabins and contemporary homes on the water. Ranch-style homes range from $450,000 to $550,000, while contemporary waterfront homes range from $550,000 to $700,000.

Bay City Sausage and more retail
Being a small neighborhood, Bay City doesn’t have a lot of retail or restaurants. Its only store, Bay City Sausage, sells a wide selection of meats and cheeses. Residents often drive next door to Westport, only 5 miles away, for a retail hub. It offers a walkable street of quaint shops and restaurants on the water, including Bennett’s Fish Shack. The seafood restaurant serves classics like fish and chips in an ambient setting, with deck views of boats at the marina’s docks. Those looking for produce and other groceries can stop by Shop 'n Kart in Westport.
