Plenty of seclusion and room to stretch out in Dorothy
Dorothy, a small rural part of New Jersey, offers a serene escape for its residents. The official motto for Buena, the township that Dorothy is a part of, is “A Small Town with a Big Heart.” Jason Myers, real estate agent with Century 21 Glen Cove and longtime resident of the area, says that another is just as fitting. “It’s a lovely area with a really welcoming community, but the real motto is ‘Mind thine own business,'” he says. “It’s the kind of place people go to get their own space, and live somewhere surrounded by green."
Classic homes on large lots, surrounded by nature
Homes in Dorothy typically come with decent acreage, running anywhere from 5 to 20 acres. “Everyone has plenty of privacy,” says Myers. “You don’t have to worry about feeling claustrophobic or too tightly packed together, and that’s the main appeal for many who come to the area.” Homes are typically traditional in design. Prospective homebuyers will find plenty of ranch-style and Cape Cod houses ranging from $180,000 to $350,000. Colonial Revivals and other larger traditional styles are available, too, and range from $375,000 to $565,000. Though Dorothy is not directly on the coast or on the banks of the Mullica River, it's close enough to those bodies of water, - along with nearby ponds and lagoons - that flooding is a risk. This risk increases during hurricane season.
Academics and athletics at Cedar Creek High
Students in the area can begin at Weymouth Township Elementary School. Despite the name, the school serves kindergarten through eighth grade and earns a B-plus from Niche. From there, students can attend Buena Regional High School, which earns a B-minus or Cedar Creek High School, which receives an A. Students at Cedar Creek can choose between magnet programs in topics such as environmental science or engineering. Cedar Creek is also known for its athletics program. Brothers and Cedar Creek alum Bo and Max Melton currently play for the Green Bay Packers and Arizona Cardinals, respectively.
Traveling to Atlantic City and Philadelphia
Though seclusion is a major part of Dorothy's appeal, residents still have access to U.S. Route 30, easing commutes to nearby Hammonton. Hammonton is also home to the nearest Amtrak stop. Travelers can make use of U.S. Route 40 to get to Atlantic City, which is about 30 miles away. Philadelphia is roughly 45 miles away. “It’s easy to get just about anywhere you want to, and within an hour or so, you can be as far as the Delaware Bay.”
Railroad Deli is the place to go for a quick bite or to stock up
Railroad Deli is a local gem that offers a modest selection of groceries, along with what Myers calls the best wings and subs in the area. “I go there at least a few times a week," he says. "It’s really that good, and that convenient for people looking to make a quick shopping trip.” Nearby Milmay is home to a Dollar General, while Egg Harbor Township's ShopRite and Vineland's Acme serve as the area's go-to spots for more extensive grocery shopping.
Appreciating the views at Maple Lake
Maple Lake serves as the area’s go-to spot for getting outdoors and appreciating the natural beauty of the area, and is also home to annual celebrations like fireworks on July 4th. Maple Lake is one of several wildlife management areas in the region, and offers bird watching and hiking. Located among the Pine Barrens, residents and visitors have access to untamed beauty and unspoiled views.
