Applewood Villages
Easter eggs filled with native grass seeds
“It was important to the people in the neighborhood to cut down on our vehicle emissions and our carbon footprint,” Villalba says. “We partnered with Summit to enroll into a single waste hauler, and we convinced them to take on a composting program. Now it’s a major thing in multiple neighborhoods – so while we’re still working on converting the entire neighborhood to the program, we were successful in getting the program started. What we composted was what we got back to put in our own gardens.” Besides the compost give-back, Applewood Villages makes sustainability an opportunity for celebration year-round. “The staple that has been our signature event is an annual electronic waste event in the spring. We also host a weed collection event in the fall,” Villalba says. “And we do our annual block party with a Gofundme page where everyone pitches in money, sponsors come in. The other thing we premiered this year is a sustainable easter egg hunt. We filled them with native grass seeds, and as [the kids] found them, they spread the seeds in the open space. In exchange they got candy. I think there were 150 people at just that event.”Orchards-turned-mature lots with postwar homes
The Applewood area was once a series of fruit orchards, and the Villages preserve their agrarian roots. Mature trees fill fenced-in backyards to the brim with natural shade. With limited homeowners association presence, most locals have free reign over their design choices and sustainability measures; fountain gardens bubble and solar panels reflect the Colorado sun. Rows of split-level homes with garage annexes and brick ranch-style homes with sidewalks curving next to car-lined streets, some across the street from small farms and stables. These homes typically go for $400,000 to $800,000. Subdivisions like Applewood Place include larger brick New Traditional homes built in the early 2000s. These, along with custom constructions with contemporary designs, sell between $1.1 million and $2 million.Jefferson County schools in Wheat Ridge
Kids in Applewood Villages attend the Jefferson County School District R-1 institutions located in Wheat Ridge. Some residents live directly across from Prospect Valley Elementary School, which handled a size increase after absorbing students from the recent closure of Kullerstrand Elementary School and scores an A-minus from Niche. Everitt Middle School scores a B-minus, and Wheat Ridge High School gets a B-plus. Wheat Ridge “Farmers” have secured a long list of state championship titles—from basketball and cheer to marching band—and keep the student body in-the-know and entertained with their online news site, The Haystack.Dog walks at Lewis Meadows or Front Range hikes
Generations of locals have been enjoying Lewis Meadows Park, and expansive grassy space to walk the dog. Meanwhile, Luise Turner Park provides an isolated space away from busy streets where neighborhood kids can play on the small playground. Even beyond these neighborhood options, locals can explore Colorado nature without completely leaving the suburbs. Crown Hill Park provides paved and gravel trails for lakeside walking, biking and birdwatching about 2.5 miles southeast of the community. The sun rises and sets over the Front Range in the distance, and those who would prefer to be in mountain territory are 6 miles from the eastern flank and sun washed, steep hikes up North Table Mountain. Bikers take the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt and Clear Creek Trail all the way from nearby Golden to Denver. The ever-evolving Applewood Village shopping center
A comfortable collection of grocery and department stores is located on the west end of the neighborhood at the Applewood Village shopping center. “The area has changed so much just in the last three or so years after Covid,” Villalba says. “All that was there was the King Soopers and the Applejack. Now we have Hobby Lobby, Chick-Fil-A, Starbucks, a Sierra Trading Post, and local restaurants.” Uncle Julio’s Hacienda Colorado is one four spinoffs of the popular chain, and customers can expect the same fresh tortillas, tableside guacamole and other items. Regional chains like Ziggi's Coffee also have a presence along this strip. Applewood Villages is also 4 miles north the extensive outlet shopping at Colorado Mills, which includes Target as its anchor store and Imax screenings at Regal UA Colorado Mills.Reaching the mountains or the Mile-High City
Several east-to-west streets in Applewood Villages run the entire 11 miles to downtown Denver, though Interstate 70—the community’s western border—remains the most popular route into the city limits. Commuters to the Mile-High City can board the Light Rail G train at Wheat Ridge Ward Station 3 miles away, which runs every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and every 30 minutes in the early mornings and late evenings. RTD bus stops also line West 38th Avenue as an alternative to driving into the city, though some may choose to take the bike lanes that trace this main road. Some find work even closer to home at major employers like Intermountain Health Lutheran Hospital, 1 mile away across the I-70 corridor. Locals welcome visitors at Denver International Airport 30 miles to the east.
