A community with room to breathe in the Indiana countryside
Walker sits 75 miles south of Chicago in the heart of the farm country of north-central Indiana, with vast open plains and fields. "People move here because you get the small-town feel with larger city amenities not too far away," Evie Parrish says. Parrish is a member of the nearby Wheatfield Chamber of Commerce. "You're not completely withdrawn from civilization but get the desired quietness." The township was established in 1851 and has a population of around 1,700 residents. Murals around the town add artistic vibrance throughout the community. Among the murals is one of a Sandhill Crane, one of Indiana's most popular wildlife species that visit the area by the thousands in the late fall and early winter.
Ranch homes on spacious lots
Walker homes come in various shapes and sizes; many include acreage and space between neighbors. Ranch-style and bungalow homes are common throughout, with some larger constructions, like Cape Cods, mixed in. Prices typically range from $200,000 for a modest rancher to about $500,000 for a larger ranch-style or bungalow home with several acres of land. Larger homes with 10+ acres will cost between $600,000 and $800,000. Land lots are common, many going for under $50,000. Trees dot the residential streets where sidewalks are rare, but driveways and garages are the norm.

Play rounds of golf at the Sandy Pines Golf Course
One of the largest outdoor recreation attractions in the area is Sandy Pines Golf Club. "It is a beautiful area that is highly regarded by golfers," Parrish says. "They are always expanding and upgrading." The club offers an 18-hole course and a venue for wedding and event services. The Kankakee Township Park is one of the standout parks, where people walk their dogs, play a game of pickleball and occasionally see a herd of Sandhill Cranes. "The Sandhill Cranes migrate to the area and can be seen all over in the fields," Parrish says. The Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area has over 8,000 acres of wetland and woods where locals go hunting and fishing.
