Small-town living just outside Wheeling

Tucked between Interstate 70 and rural West Virginia hillsides, Clator, a small Wheeling suburb, provides quick access to downtown while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere focused on community. "It's a very quaint area. A lot of people have lived there for decades and really look out for their neighbors," says Chris Thomas, an area resident and Realtor with eXp Realty. Despite being mostly residential, the neighborhood includes several small businesses, medical offices, locally owned restaurants and the WVU Wheeling Hospital, a major local employer. The area does not lack in outdoor amenities either as the Wheeling Heritage Trail runs right next to Interstate 70, and nearby J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex is a hub for youth baseball and softball. With proximity to nearby amenities and a small-town community at home, Clator offers homebuyers a laid-back lifestyle just outside of Wheeling.

Clator offers housing variety with a vintage feel

Arranged along a small grid of sidewalk-lined streets, Clator homes range in age from the early 1900s to the '70s. Buyers can find American Foursquare and cottage designs with original wooden siding or opt for a more modern ranch, spit-level or traditional home. "Some of the homes here haven't been cared for over the years, but others are very nice and really preserve their vintage feel," says Margaret Molnar, an area resident and Realtor with Fathom Realty. Smaller properties from the early 1900s tend to sell from $70,000 to $150,000, while more modern homes with over 1,500 square feet sell from about $150,000 to $270,000. Rental options are also available due to the neighborhood's in-demand location. Clator has a CAP Index Crime Score of 3 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Family-owned dining on Mount Dechantal Road

Located on Mount Dechantal Road, Figaretti's Restaurant is family-owned and has served Clator since 1948. "Figaretti's is incredible. I honestly think it's the best Italian food in the Ohio Valley," says Chris Thomas, an area resident and Realtor with eXp Realty. Celebrating Wheeling's Festival of Lights

A major event during the holidays is Oglebay's Festival of Lights. Open from November to January, this popular drive-through display features over 300 acres of twinkling lights spread across a 6-mile route. "The Festival of Lights is huge for locals and even people from out of town. Tour busses come in from all over, from New York to Canada," Thomas says. Local students going with their families to the event may also be able to show off their handiwork, as many of the displays were constructed in Wheeling Park High's vocational classes.
