Small-town living just west of Wheeling
Situated less than 5 miles from the West Virginia and Ohio border, Lansing is an unincorporated rural community of nearly 300 people. With its proximity to the Ohio River, the area was once home to booming coal and steel factories and farmland. Today, businesses have shifted to mom-and-pop retailers that thrive alongside the local community. "There's a real sense of comradery with many of the businesses there. I like being able to talk to them and get their roots," says Laney Ross, a broker with Harvey Goodman who lives and raised his kids in the area. Although it's just a few miles from larger cities like Wheeling and St. Clairsville, Lansing has preserved an old-fashioned sense of community. Homes are almost all a hundred years old and shopkeepers are often on a first-name basis with locals, so it's not a surprise that many residents have chosen to stay in the area for years.
Shopping and dining on National Road
U.S. Route 40, also known as National Road, is lined with locally-owned shops like Mike's Second to None Thrift Store and beauty salon Jacci's Classic Creations. Vino di Piccin Winery & Tasting House is another staple in the community, offering 16 distinct varietals of family-recipe wines and live music in their outdoor seating area. The Piccin family has passed down their traditional Italian recipes over the course of 100 years and select their grapes from across the Ohio Valley to produce a range of reds, whites and Cabernets. The closest grocery store is Riesbeck’s, 2 miles east in Brookside. The community is home to Sonny Boy Family Restaurant, which has served the area since 1965. "We get lots of regulars here, I know most people who come in by name," says owner Melissa Starkey. United Dairy Farm is also in Brookside and sells locally sourced products.

Hundred-year-old homes in Lansing
Most homes in Lansing were built between 1915 and 1940 and feature a mix of traditional, farmhouse and American Foursquare styles. Spread across a small grid of suburban streets, many properties have wide front porches and rest on quarter-acre yards. The original wooden siding on the outside of the homes is also matched on the inside with antique woodwork. "My clients love the oak staircases and the unpainted wood inside the homes, Ross says. “It gives them a nice, warm feel." Selling from as low as $50,000 up to about $150,000, homes here are considered relatively affordable. "That doesn't mean they aren't well-cared for,” Ross says. “People here have old-school values; they take care of their properties." Lansing has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. With its proximity to Wheeling Creek, FEMA does require varying levels of flood insurance.

Bridgeport public schools nearby
Students in Lansing attend the Bridgeport Exempted Village School District, which is in the neighboring town of Wolfhurst. Bridgeport Elementary, Middle and High School are all in the same building. The elementary and high schools get a B grade from Niche; the middle school receives a B-minus. Bridgeport High School boasts a relatively low student-to-teacher ratio of just 12:1 and offers clubs ranging from band and chorus to chess or coding. The school used to be known as an athletics powerhouse, but recent class sizes have been too low for the school to compete at a higher level, according to Ross.
Heading outdoors in the Ohio Valley
About 3 miles east of Lansing, the town of Bridgeport has the closest available parks. Gould Park has baseball fields that host little league games. Kirkwood Heights Park offers a small basketball court and playground. Farther east, the Ohio River beckons to fishers, paddlers and boaters alike. The Wheeling Island Marina is a nearby location for those wanting to store a boat and Heritage Port provides a scenic area to walk along the river's banks. One of the largest parks in the area, Oglebay Park, is just 5 miles past Wheeling and offers everything from a zoo to golfing. Hiking and walking trails traverse the park's mountainous landscape, taking visitors past several gardens and even a scenic waterfall. Other popular activities include paddle-boating on Schenk Lake and playing on the park's large, rubberized playground.
