“Semi-country” living set in the Wheeling hills
At 1,200 feet above sea level, Mozart is a small suburb outside Wheeling that offers scenic views and proximity to the city. "Mozart has a semi-country feel to it. it's fairly quiet, nestled back in the hills on the other side of U.S. Route 250," says Chris Thomas, an area resident and Realtor with EXP Realty. This unincorporated community was first established in the early 1900s when local brewery owner Henry Schmulbach created Mozart Park as a recreational area for Wheeling's large German American population. Today, Mozart still has a welcoming community feel, with a volunteer fire department, church and two locally owned bars in the area that host live music. Located on the southern edge of Ohio County, Mozart combines a rural atmosphere with access to Downtown Wheeling just 3 miles north.

Locally owned dining right on Frazier Avenue
Open since 1989, The Incline Bar is a local fixture in Mozart's community. The bar is named after an inclined railway built by Schmulbach that used to be a major draw to the community. While the railway and its surrounding attractions no longer exist, The Incline Bar offers free billiards on Thursday nights and occasionally hosts local musical artists. Opened in 2024, The Rose Garden is a locally owned bar and grill known for its outdoor eating area, which has cornhole and string lights. "They have really good, loaded potatoes and a flight of dips and chips. The owner is also from Mozart and he's been doing a great job with the place," says Shelley Crake, an area resident and Realtor with Fathom Realty. The Highlands, a shopping mall, is 10 miles east along Interstate 70 with national retailers, including Target, Walmart, Cabela's and Kohl's.

Midcentury Mozart homes with a view
Homes in Mozart are spread out along a hilly terrain, with large, grassy lots and views of the surrounding area. While the community's steep, winding streets lack sidewalks, there isn't too much traffic to worry about. The oldest homes here date back to the 1920s, but a larger portion were built closer to 1950, which is relatively new for the Wheeling area. Midcentury brick ranch-style houses are interspersed between traditional, cottage and farmhouse styles built with wooden siding. "Properties are mostly on the smaller end, but they still have a lot of great vintage features and are considered affordable for the city," Crake says. Most addresses offer wide front patios and other qualities like original brick fireplaces. Most sell from $80,000 to $200,000 and range from 850 to 1,900 square feet. Mozart has a CAP Index Crime Score of 3 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.

Getting around the greater Wheeling area
Despite being known for its semi-rural surroundings, Mozart is still relatively close to many of Wheeling's amenities. "Nowhere is inconvenient to get to really. Wheeling is such a small place, you can get anywhere in 20 minutes," Crake says. With U.S. Route 250 passing just west of Mozart, residents can drive the 3 miles into downtown in just 7 minutes. Interstate 70 also intersects with U.S. Route 250, leading the 6 miles to WVU Wheeling Hospital, which is one of the largest employers in the area.
