Mozart
Locally owned dining right on Frazier Avenue
Open since 1989, The Incline Bar is a local fixture in Mozart's community. The bar is named after an inclined railway built by Schmulbach that used to be a major draw to the community. While the railway and its surrounding attractions no longer exist, The Incline Bar offers free billiards on Thursday nights and occasionally hosts local musical artists. Opened in 2024, The Rose Garden is a locally owned bar and grill known for its outdoor eating area, which has cornhole and string lights. "They have really good, loaded potatoes and a flight of dips and chips. The owner is also from Mozart and he's been doing a great job with the place," says Shelley Crake, an area resident and Realtor with Fathom Realty. The Highlands, a shopping mall, is 10 miles east along Interstate 70 with national retailers, including Target, Walmart, Cabela's and Kohl's.Midcentury Mozart homes with a view
Homes in Mozart are spread out along a hilly terrain, with large, grassy lots and views of the surrounding area. While the community's steep, winding streets lack sidewalks, there isn't too much traffic to worry about. The oldest homes here date back to the 1920s, but a larger portion were built closer to 1950, which is relatively new for the Wheeling area. Midcentury brick ranch-style houses are interspersed between traditional, cottage and farmhouse styles built with wooden siding. "Properties are mostly on the smaller end, but they still have a lot of great vintage features and are considered affordable for the city," Crake says. Most addresses offer wide front patios and other qualities like original brick fireplaces. Most sell from $80,000 to $200,000 and range from 850 to 1,900 square feet. Mozart has a CAP Index Crime Score of 3 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.Two school districts based on address
Students living in Mozart may attend either Ohio County or Marshall County Public Schools, depending on where they live. "Some of the homes are on the Ohio County side some are on the Marshall County sides, but both are highly desirable school districts," Thomas says.Students zoned for Ohio County may attend Ritchie Elementary, which is in South Wheeling and earns an A rating from Niche. Just a few blocks away, Wheeling Middle School earns a B rating from Niche. Older students may attend Wheeling Park High, which is 8 miles away and earns an A-minus. One Saturday a month, students and community members gather for the History of Wheeling Course, a free and public class.
Heading outdoors at Oglebay Park
Located in the heart of Mozart, Mozart City Park offers a playground and basketball court within walking distance from many homes. Mozart Ballfield is part of the Mountaineer Baseball Association, a rec baseball league for children 4 to 14 years of age. Another nearby option is the Wheeling Heritage Trail, which passes through Heritage Port about 4 miles north of Mozart. This 18-mile fitness path stretches along the Ohio River and through Downtown Wheeling. For more green space, Oglebay Park is about 8 miles north with over 1,600 acres of hiking trails, gardens and golf courses. Popular attractions include a large, rubberized playground, a paddle-boating lake and a zoo. Those looking to get athletic can also visit the park's tennis courts, swimming pool or ski slopes.Getting around the greater Wheeling area
Despite being known for its semi-rural surroundings, Mozart is still relatively close to many of Wheeling's amenities. "Nowhere is inconvenient to get to really. Wheeling is such a small place, you can get anywhere in 20 minutes," Crake says. With U.S. Route 250 passing just west of Mozart, residents can drive the 3 miles into downtown in just 7 minutes. Interstate 70 also intersects with U.S. Route 250, leading the 6 miles to WVU Wheeling Hospital, which is one of the largest employers in the area. Pittsburgh International Airport is the closest option for commercial flights, with service from national airlines like Southwest and Delta. The airport is 62 miles, or a 1-hour drive, northeast along Interstate 70.
