A church, a post office and a local bar are among the few institutions located in the otherwise residential community of Neffs. Originally established as a coal mining town in the 19th century, buyers can find vintage homes built over a hundred years ago and views of the area's rolling Appalachian foothills. "Growing up, I could leave at seven in the morning to go play outside and not come back until seven at night, and my mom would never be worried," says Laney Ross, a broker with Harvey Goodman who lives and raised his kids in the area. He may be referring to previous decades, but Neffs still offers a simple pace of life about 8 miles from Wheeling, West Virginia. Like many people who grew up here, Ross says his kids have since moved away to pursue careers elsewhere, but they always look back on Neffs with a sense of nostalgia, remembering it as a welcoming home to come back to.

Often built from about 1900 to 1925 by local mining companies to provide housing for their employees, many homes in Neffs are well over a hundred years old. Though these boxy, traditional designs may have limited square footage, Ross says that homebuyers have often built onto them, adding outdoor patios and extra rooms over the years. Larger Craftsman homes built in the 1930s and '50s add architectural diversity to the community, along with more contemporary ranch-style homes built since 2010. Most properties in the center of town sit on closely spaced lots and sell from about $40,000 to $125,000, while those located further away often offer multi-acre lots can sell from about $175,000 to $350,000. Neffs CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4. With its proximity to several creeks, FEMA requires varying levels of additional flood insurance.
Most homes in Neffs sell from $50,000 to $150,000 dollars.
Away from the main town, larger homes with several acres can sell for up to $350,000 in Neffs.
