19th century Victorian homes
Most homes in North Wheeling are brick townhouses built from about 1850 to 1900, though a few traditional homes can be found as well. Victorian-inspired features are common in the neighborhood, including homes designed with stylized dormer windows and mansard roofs. Other addresses may have gingerbread trim and colorful stained glass windows. Lining the west side of Main Street, many homes look out over the Ohio River and offer multiple levels of patios for taking in the view. Given their age, a portion of the homes in North Wheeling also may require repairs. "Buyers may find things like cracks or sagging plaster walls in some homes, but if you're not afraid of a little work, these homes are selling for about as low as you could pick them up for," says Lyndsay Maynard, associate broker and owner of Harvey Goodman, Realtor. Most properties sell from as low as $30,000 to about $250,000. North Wheeling has a CAP Index Crime Score of 5 out of 10, which is slightly higher than the national average of 4. With its proximity to the Ohio River, some federal lenders may require varying levels of flood insurance.Heading outdoors in the Ohio Valley

Victorian Old Town Association organizes a sidewalk sale and community cleanups on Saturday mornings, but the much larger draw is found downtown at Heritage Port. Most of Wheeling's outdoor festivals take place in this riverfront park, which has a wooden dock and open-air amphitheater for holding large gatherings. "Last week, there was a WWII landing craft docked there that you could go on and explore, and it's where you can find all the live music in the summer," Burnside says. Popular annual festivals include the Mountaineer Brewfest, which has been celebrating West Virginia’s finest craft and microbrews every August since 2014.
