Most homes in the oldest parts of the neighborhood were built from about 1905 to 1950, with diverse styles ranging from American Foursquares and Craftsmans to midcentury cottages. Selling from about $100,000 to $200,000, properties tend to have rear alley parking with detached garages and wide front patios to help create a more social atmosphere. Homes in this lower part of the neighborhood are also close to Wheeling Creek, making flooding an occasional concern. "In the 25 years I've been here, we've only had two high water events. People might get some water in the basements, but it's not an ongoing issue," says Eric Stakem, local resident and owner of the Hole 'n Run. North of Oakmont Road, properties have more recent build dates (within the last few decades). Featuring with larger floorplans combined with traditional and Classical Revival exteriors, here potential buyers should expect higher prices ranging from about $250,000 to $650,000, depending on size and condition.From nearby elementary schools to Wheeling University
When students in the neighborhood are ready to go to school, there are plenty of options nearby. For public school options, students can start off at Steenrod Elementary or Woodsdale Elementary, both of which are less than a mile from the neighborhood and earn A-minus ratings on Niche. Tridelphia Middle also earns an A-minus, while Wheeling Park High receives a B-plus rating on Niche. For those looking for alternative schooling options, Wheeling Country Day School and St. Michael Parish School both provide private options for students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Another notable mention in the area is The Linsly School, a private boarding school that instructs from sixth through twelfth grades. Receiving an A rating, Linsly is considered to be the best private high school in West Virginia according to Niche. For continued education, Wheeling University is also located right within the neighborhood. It has everything from hiking and golf to spa experiences, and even snow-skiing in the winter," says Morgan. With a zoo, four golf courses and plenty of events, folks can also rent a cottage or stay in the park's resort to spend more time exploring all of Oglebay's offerings.Local options for shopping and dining
For shopping and dining, residents of Pleasanton-Oakmont have several locally owned options within walking distance. At Wheeling Coffee Shoppe, patrons can start the mornings by sipping a warm drink while sitting outside. For something later in the day, Greco's is an Italian restaurant serving pizza, pasta and other Italian specialties in their buffet. Also located in the Pleasanton Shopping Plaza, folks can shop for everyday goods at Dollar General, engage in some after-school learning at Kumon or get a haircut from Stradwick's Fade Cave. Several businesses here have also been serving the neighborhood for years. Hole 'n Run is one local example that has been selling pro-line golf equipment, technical running shoes and custom sports apparel since 1979. For groceries and other essentials, a Kroger is located just over a mile down Mount Dechantal Road. More chain locations and big box stores can also be found at The Highlands shopping mall, which is about 8 miles east along Interstate 70. For a family-friendly activity that's open all year, folks can head over to the Stifel Fine Arts Center. Housed in the historic Edemar Mansion, this public facility has galleries and exhibitions for people to peruse artwork, as well as courses in pottery, stained glass and painting. In addition to a dance school, the center also reaches the community by hosting field trips and art activities for nearby schools. Scheduled events like Jazz at the Stifel or The Art of Wine are also popular ways for people to use the space, listening to music or sipping and learning about wine in the elegant gardens and living room of the mansion. "My goal is to bring more regional and national artists here for the community to see. Hopefully, it can inspire them and help increase their skill sets," says Morgan.Traveling around the Pleasanton-Oakmont area
Located just 3 miles, or about a 6-minute drive from Downtown Wheeling, folks in Pleasanton-Oakmont are connected with the greater Wheeling area via Interstate 70 and National Road, which both border the neighborhood. Whether commuting to work or in need of medical assistance, WVU Wheeling Hospital is less than a mile away, located right across Interstate 70 from the neighborhood. Pleasanton-Oakmont is also about 60 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, which is the closest big city. When traveling out of the region or abroad, Pittsburgh International Airport is also about 20 miles outside of the city.
