Suburban Woodsdale homes with historic charm
Potential homebuyers can find Victorian properties set on a narrow, grassy lot and built near the turn of the 20th century. Large Queen Anne, American Foursquare, and Colonial Revival designs feature ornamental columns along their wide front porches, as well as rounded towers and bay windows that give each home individual character. Many of the historic homes in Woodsdale-Edgewood have large layouts of up to 3,000 square feet, but ranch-style houses and bungalows from the 1960s can also be found on the edge of the neighborhood. Most homes sell from about $150,000 to $400,000, with only large estates selling for over $500,000. Woodsdale-Edgewood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 3 out of 10, slightly lower than the national average.Heading outdoors in Oglebay Park
Close to home, Edgewood Park and Edgington Lane Playground offer a destination for walks through the neighborhood as well as somewhere for kids to play or shoot hoops on the basketball court. A much larger attraction, however, is Oglebay Park. "It's one of the most beautiful city parks you'll ever see," says Bobbi Priebe, a local artist and resident at Artworks Around Town. Spread over 1,600 acres, this municipal park offers golf courses, nature trails and a zoo, set amongst scenic gardens, a lake and a waterfall. Activities like paddle-boating and fishing are common during the summer, while a ski slope makes it fun to get outside during the colder months. First opened in 1928, this manicured park is free to enter and draws people from across the area. "My family has rented a cottage there during the holidays for years, they have a lodge, swimming and great events- it's a special place," Priebe says. From nearby elementary schools to Wheeling University
Students can attend Woodsdale Elementary, which is close enough to walk to and earns an A-minus rating on Niche. Tridelphia Middle also earns an A-minus, while Wheeling Park High receives a B-plus. Another well-known option in the area is The Linsly School, a private boarding school that instructs middle through high schoolers. The boarding school ranks an A on Niche, and the site ranks it as the best private high school in West Virginia. For continued education, Wheeling University is also located right about a mile from Woodsdale–Edgewood. Opened in 1954, the school offers majors, including business, education and nursing.
Community events at Oglebay Park
Oglebay Park is also the sight of some of the area's largest events, like the Fall Food Truck Festival and Oglebayfest. Oglebayfest has a parade and fireworks, as well as competitions in hog calling, butter making and fiddling. Both events also feature live music and food trucks. During the winter months, Oglebay’s Festival of Lights brings thousands of visitors to the park to drive through miles of colorful holiday-themed light displays. Many of the structures in the show were made by students at Wheeling Park High School, where technology classes teach them to weld metal and program different movements. Adding to the holiday spirit, Wheeling Park High also broadcasts Christmas carols and information about the light show from its radio station, WPHP 91.9.Getting around the Woodsdale-Edgewood area
