White City is a metro township and residential enclave in Sandy, Utah, about 17 miles south of Salt Lake City. According to Michael Wolters, a Realtor with Keller Williams - Salt Lake City and over 20 years of experience, homes here are more affordable than in neighboring communities. “You get the luxury of being located within the Sandy borders [without paying] the Sandy prices for homes,” says Wolters. Residents enjoy a neighborly lifestyle with community events like the annual Southeast Township Days, local parks and convenient access to nearby shopping and dining centers like The Shops at South Town, all set by the rising Wasatch Mountains in the east. “The main attraction of White City is its central location. It’s close to Salt Lake City, and it’s close to just about everything you might need in terms of amenities,” says Carlos Nelson, a Realtor with RealtyPath who has worked in the area for over 10 years.

Single-family homes in a sought-after area
The average home value in White City is about $540,000, and homes typically range between $475,000 and $700,000. “Homes tend to sell quickly due to its desirable location and proximity to the eastern Wasatch Mountains,” says Wolters. Neighbors enjoy sidewalk-lined streets with well-maintained lawns and tall, mature trees. Most homes are renovated, late-20th-century single-story or split-level ramblers. A typical four-or-five-bed, two-bath single-story rambler goes for about $500,000, while a newly renovated version starts around $550,000. Homes that go for $600,000 or more often have features like RV parking, a second kitchen or back porches. “The price points are close to average for the area, although they might be a little higher than other places further from Salt Lake,” says Nelson. “We don’t see a lot of first-time homebuyers in White City, but the prices typically aren’t so high that families can’t afford them.”

Grassy neighborhood parks with the Wasatch Mountains on the horizon
Big Bear Park is in White City’s northeastern corner off Highway 209. The 14-acre park is popular with families for its extensive playground featuring a ropes course and zipline; there are also sports amenities, like tennis courts, grassy fields and baseball diamonds. Park visitors can also access the White City Canal Trail nearby, which runs north to south and connects several other neighborhood trails and parks, including Dimple Dell Regional Park, a vast 630-acre park offering several hiking, biking and equestrian trails. About 15 miles away, skiers can hit the slopes at the Alta Ski Area, which receives an annual average of 538 inches of snowfall each year.

Across the street, the Sandy Village Shopping Center offers several regionally-owned businesses, like Red Balloon Toy Store and Ski ‘N See. About 3 miles southwest, Wolters recommends shopping and dining at the South Towne Mall (also called The Shops at South Town), where department stores like REI and JCPenney can be found. Nearby, Slackwater, a restaurant and pub, serves artisan pizza and craft beer in a laidback setting; there’s also live music in the evenings on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.

White City’s annual events bring the community together
The largest event in White City is Southeast Township Days, held every year in August at Big Bear Park; residents gather to enjoy food, games and community before a fireworks display punctuates the festivities. In September, car enthusiasts can sign up for the annual White City Car Parade, where locals show off their vehicles on a planned route throughout the area. There’s also White City Community Plant Swap Meets, usually held once or twice a year at Big Bear Park, where residents freely exchange their plants and try their luck in a plant raffle with donated prizes. Residents can also head to the Hale Centre Theatre on Monroe Street off Interstate 15 for theatrical performances, and Wolters recommends summer concerts at the Sandy City Amphitheater off Highway 209.
Commuting from White City
Locals in White City have convenient access to Interstate 15, which runs along the neighborhood’s western side and leads north to Salt Lake City, 17 miles away, and south to Provo, 32 miles away; during rush hour, these drives take 20 to 40 minutes, and 35 to 60 minutes, respectively. Utah Transit Authority provides TRAX, a light rail system, for commuters throughout Salt Lake County; White City residents can head to Historic Sandy Station on 9000 South for a 32-minute commute to Salt Lake City. Intermountain Health Alta View Hospital is centrally located off Highway 209 for easy access, while Salt Lake International Airport is about 19 miles north, following Interstate 215.
