Fisher Hill: built on the high ground above downtown White Plains a century ago
A couple of blocks from the high-rise government buildings and apartment complexes in downtown White Plains, the streets start to change as they begin their incline into Fisher Hill. The neighborhood looks like a well-preserved slice of the turn of the 20th century, with pointed towers rising from homes and decorative white fences surrounding brightly painted houses. Homes define this neighborhood 25 miles north of New York City, but its proximity to downtown puts it within a mile of shopping and events, such as the weekly White Plains Farmers Market.
Early 1900s architecture and well-kept properties
Fisher Hill’s streets showcase early 20th-century architecture: Bay windows overlook the streets from Queen Anne homes, the roofs of Tudor Revivals slope nearly to the ground and American Foursquare houses line up in near rows. Stone walls and iron fences sometimes border the compact yards, and parking options vary from narrow driveways to the closest street curb. Prices start around $650,000, climbing to $1 million. There are a few multifamily homes too, with prices between $1 million and $1.2 million.
Large Queen Anne homes are common in the neighborhood of Fisher Hill.

Navigating White Plains Public Schools
The district uses a lottery system to assign kids to elementary schools that their parents rank on an application, instead of zoning them to schools based on where they live. “It’s the only district in Westchester County I’m aware of where you get to pick your top three schools in terms of elementary schools,” says Julie Alcee, an associate broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New York Properties and a White Plains resident. One of the nearest options is Post Road Elementary, which gets a B grade from Niche. Eastview Middle School teaches the district’s sixth graders, and Highlands Middle School accepts seventh and eighth graders. Neither have Niche grades. Starting in ninth grade, students can attend White Plains High School, graded an A-minus.

Small eateries and a hospital along Post Road
Post Road passes through the east side of Fisher Hill. Along the street, Aires Sin Fronteras serves food and drinks in a small corner café, while El Miski offers Peruvian food in a silver and red building resembling a dining car. Post Road is also home to White Plains Hospital, while Food City Market grocery store is a few blocks away. Other shopping options, including Target and Nordstrom, are less than a mile away downtown.

Getting outdoors at renovated Kittrell Park, riverside trail
The neighborhood’s Kittrell Park has undergone several improvements since 2015. That year, the city finished renovations of the park’s swimming pool. White Plains installed a new playground the following year, and recently refurbished the basketball courts, often used by local youth teams. The Bronx River Pathway passes Fisher Hill on the paved trail’s 9-mile route between Valhalla and Yonkers.

Train station and highways connect to New York City
Trains depart for Manhattan from the White Plains MTA station just outside the neighborhood. Residents on the north end of Fisher Hill can reach the station with a 5-minute bike ride, but it’s an eight-minute drive from the south side. The Bee-Line bus system transports passengers downtown from stops along Post Road, while Bronx River Parkway takes motorists to New York City, a 45- to 90-minute drive. Westchester County closes the parkway to cars multiple Sundays each year, turning it into a nearly 7-mile cycling, skating and walking path. “That would be something a family or an individual could do on a Sunday,” Alcee says.
The White Plains train station gets Fisher Hill commuters to New York City in less than 30 minutes.
