Pierogi Fest and Festival of the Lakes
"There's always something going on in downtown Whiting that community members can join in on," says local Chamber of Commerce employee Elliot Bibat, who has lived in the neighborhood his whole life. "Pierogi Fest happens every summer, and the community really comes together to celebrate." Every July, the renowned Pierogi Fest draws more than 300,000 people worldwide with live music and hundreds of vendors selling food, local art or specialty goods from the Lake Michigan area.
Also in July, residents gather at the Wolf Lake Memorial Park Pavilion for the Festival of the Lakes celebration which features popular musical acts and special events like the Fishing Derby or Polka Party. More affectionately known as "The PAV," its tower design was inspired by a Frank Lloyd Wright design, and it is Northwest Indiana's premier outdoor venue for concerts and movies.
Quiet streets with tall, green trees
Single-family bungalows sit alongside brick-cobbled roads shaded by tall, green trees. Most homes sit on modest green lots with a small front and back yard. A 2-bedroom bungalow can be listed for $145,000, and a 4-bedroom cape cod home with a deck can be sold for $325,000.
