A verdant, suburban neighborhood of Whittier
A longstanding part of Southern California, West Whittier’s connection to nature stems back to the 1860s. Back then, the area flourished with walnut and citrus production. Today its parks and hiking trails provide greenery as well as great views from a Puente Hills location. And don't be surprised if it seems familiar — lots of movies have been shot here, including "Back to the Future" and "Matilda." The neighborhood is the western side of Whittier, east of downtown LA and named after Quaker poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier. The lush suburb offers diverse architecture as well as proximity to Uptown Whittier — a hub for bustling retail and community events.
Tree-lined streets and diverse architecture in West Whittier
Tree-lined residential streets are a big part of Whittier, which is recognized as a Tree City by the National Arbor Day Foundation. That means it's considered an urban forest. In West Whittier, street names reflect this, with Acacia, Magnolia and Palm avenues. The lots tend to be landscaped, some with palm trees, rose bushes or agave plants. In the northern part of the neighborhood, winding streets ascend through the hills. Some properties here benefit from panoramic views of the city and a quieter atmosphere. The architecture runs the gamut: Craftsman bungalows, Mediterranean houses and midcentury ranch-style homes. Craftsman bungalows range from $700,000 to $900,000, while Mediterranean houses range from $1.3 million to $1.8 million.

It passes through the Puente Hills and features views of the San Gabriel Mountains and downtown LA on clear days. “I live very close to it and have done the hike a couple times. It's a big draw for those who like to hike, and it's right by the Uptown area," says Realtor Remoun Said, who works with Keller Williams Pacific Estates and has over a decade of experience in the area. "You can go on a hike then go for breakfast on the weekends." For a more urban feel, Whittier Greenway Trail is a 4.5-mile walking and biking trail throughout the city. It connects to some of Whittier’s parks, including Palm Park, which includes a pool, a picnic area and tennis courts.
