A sleepy area of already rural Wichita Falls
Loch Lomond is an established area of Wichita Falls, a city that's more on the rural side. The real estate market in this neighborhood is relatively slow, with just a few homes for sale at any given time. "Mainly what I am seeing are the military moving in and out. A few people that are renting are starting to buy," says Dana Ross Gentry, a local Realtor with RE/MAX Elite Group who's sold homes in the city for 8 years. Some neighbors living along the western side of Loch Lomond are by U.S. State Route 287, offering a straight shoot to Sheppard Air Force base in 10 miles. To the east, roads cap either at Loch Lomond Park or a flat and vast stretch of open land. While home to mostly military professionals and generational families, one of Wichita Falls' newest high schools just opened 3 miles north, and Gentry says that will surely spark more interest.

Flight sounds kick off from Kickapoo Downtown Airport
Residents might see planes flying overhead from their backyards as Kickapoo Downtown Airport is just west of Loch Lomond. This is a general aviation airport used by private flyers, and it does cause consistent traffic sounds. For connecting flights to Dallas Fort Worth International, locals can take U.S. 287 to Sheppard Air Force Base, which houses the Wichita Falls Regional Airport. U.S. 287 runs along the neighborhood’s western side and connects locals to every other major highway in the city, including Interstate 44. When care is needed, United Regional Healthcare System is the closest hospital, less than 5 miles north.

Catfish Grill has been a local favorite since the '90s
Within 3 miles, locals have access to United Supermarkets for groceries, Dollar Tree, Starbucks, and Catfish Grill. The grill has been a local favorite for fish fry since 1993, but it also serves hamburgers and chicken fried steak. There's a small selection of antique stores and modern gastropubs downtown, less than 5 miles north. For the past seven years, which is "new" by city standards, Wichita Falls Brewing Company has been a go-to for local craft brews on tap and cheesy slices of pizza. The nearest major shopping is within 6 miles, between the boulevards of Kemp and Kell and Lawrence Road, where there are big-box retailers, from Target to At Home.

Early mornings at Loch Lomond Park
According to Gentry, a “cool streak” during the summer in Wichita Falls means temperatures are in the 90s. “If you have young kids, you have to get out in the morning and play before it gets too hot,” she says. In the mornings, parents can walk with their kids to Loch Lomond Park, which offers a playground, swings and fenced-in softball fields. Weeks Park is the largest recreational hub nearby. Less than 4 miles west, it has lighted tennis and pickleball courts and houses the city’s golf course. The park also has a kids’-friendly fishing pond for burgeoning anglers.

The homes in Loch Lomond are both traditional and eclectic
Homebuyers eyeing Loch Lomond or anywhere in Wichita Falls can expect caring neighbors. "There's just a real sense of community, of people helping people," Gentry says. Driving through the neighborhood streets, an eclectic array of minimal traditionals and ranch styles appear, some set apart by bright paint, tin roofs, wood paneling and gingerbread trim. Driveways are small, leading some residents to park their vehicles on the street or on their small front lawns. While some homes have fallen into disrepair, others are well-maintained, offering a bit of a mix. "It's a very affordable, older neighborhood, but you have some houses that have been updated," says Linda Warnock, a RE/MAX Elite Group Realtor who's lived in Wichita Falls for 21 years. While the average price per square foot in Wichita Falls is around $130, in Loch Lomond, it's around $113. Prices range from around $80,000 to $200,000, depending on a home's size and condition.

North Texas weather brings severe storms and hail
Some neighbors sit in their front driveway on foldout chairs to watch storms pass through Wichita Falls. Having a carport, garage or both — which many homes do — is essential here as sometimes those storms bring hail. "Microbursts," a sudden onset of strong wind, are common and can cause severe damage. However, local Realtor Tim Lockhart of Keller Williams Lonestar DFW says he can't remember one affecting a home in 10 years. Lockhart retired from the Air Force in 2013 and began selling homes in Wichita Falls shortly afterward. Droughts occur during the summer and can sometimes cause wildfires. The city imposes year-round sprinkler restrictions to conserve water.
