College energy meets established residential streets in Fairmount
Home to Wichita State University, Fairmount is a unique neighborhood that blends residential living with a hip college town vibe. Like many north Wichita neighborhoods, Fairmount has historically been an economically disadvantaged area. There are many dilapidated homes that are typically fixed up by investors who then rent them out or sell them for a relatively affordable price compared to much of the city. About 75% of the community rents, including the many college students who live in apartments close to campus. The university brings a lot of excitement to the area, whether it be a basketball game or a fun community event.

Wichita Transit provides public buses in Fairmount.
Commuting downtown and around the city
As anyone in Wichita will tell you, most places in the city are rarely more than 20 minutes away. That goes for the city’s biggest employers, including McConnell Air Force Base and the many aviation plants that give Wichita its nickname: Air Capital of the World. Downtown is about 10 minutes away. The commute avoids highways, but you'll pass several stoplights along the way. You can also get around by taking a Wichita Transit bus.
