A residential golf club in Wichita

In 1987, former PGA Tour member and Wichita native Johnny Stevens combined his love of golf and real estate to develop the Willowbend Golf Club and neighborhood. Today, residents have stunning views of the semi-private 18-hole course, which measures more than 7,000 yards but offers nine tee options for varying skill levels. And while neighbors enjoy golf together, they also form bonds off the links. “We have a pool in our back yard, so we have a lot of golfers that come over on the weekends,” says Michele Bruch-Miller, a resident of Willowbend and a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. “There’s also a couple here, and they have parties all the time, and all the kids and parents come out.” While living in Willowbend feels secluded from the city, it’s a short drive to convenient commercial hubs.

A golf course view from every home

Residential streets wind around the golf course, often with cart paths crossing the residential streets and with backyards facing the links. “It has a really traditional and quiet suburb-like feel, but the golf course gives it a unique level of beauty and community,” says Heather Golden, associate broker and Realtor with J.P. Weigand & Sons. Each house has similar neo-eclectic architecture, but with its own unique style, so no two houses are exactly alike. Fixed on quarter-acre lots, these homes typically offer 2,000 to 4,000 square feet of living space with three to five bedrooms, selling anywhere between $300,000 and $500,000.

Golfing and hanging out at the clubhouse

In addition to public and members-only tee times, Willowbend has a driving range and a clubhouse with a pro shop, restaurant and an outdoor lounge area. “There’s a group of women that will go to the clubhouse to play cards, bingo and Dominos,” says Bruch-Miller. “The patio is covered and has TVs, so guys will go there to hang out and watch golf.” While there’s no fishing in the lakes on the golf course, residents can cast a line in the stocked pond by the clubhouse. Kids can also have fun on the fenced-in playground on Ironwood Street.

Award-winning music education

Students attend Gammon Elementary and Stucky Middle, each graded a C from Niche. They’ll go on to C-plus-graded Wichita Heights High, ranked the 6th-most diverse high school in the state. Middle and high school students can participate in award-winning orchestra, band and choir programs as Wichita Public Schools was consecutively named one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants from 2020 to 2024.

A 10-mile drive to Downtown Wichita

Shopping and dining on North Rock Road

North Rock Road splits the golf course community in half, leading 1 mile south to retailers and restaurants and even more down the road. The closest shopping center features a Kohl’s and Sam’s Club, along with several other national retailers. Locals can grab a bite to eat from one of the many fast-food restaurants or one of the few local establishments. Spangles, a Wichita chain, is a popular spot for its 50s diner vibe. There’s also Tacos TJ 664 for Mexican food and Fizz, known for its burgers, homemade pickles and craft soda. Another two miles down the road is a Sam’s Club, Walmart and even more restaurants to choose from.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
