Village of Santiago
Homes in the Village of Santiago
The neighborhood was built between 1999 and 2001 with models from several of the Villages’ home series. Closely set Patio Villas come in one-, two- and three-bedroom floor plans and prices range from the low $200,000s to the low $300,000s. Courtyard Villas offer more space, particularly outdoors with small fenced-in courtyards. Prices range from the high $200,000s to just under $400,000. Designer Homes come in three- and four-bedroom floorplans. They range from the mid $300,000s to $600,000, and occupy some of the community’s largest lots. Designer Homes on golf course lots fall between $500,000 and $600,000. All villagers pay a low monthly amenity fee that covers access to all recreation centers, country clubs, pools and more.El Santiago, El Diablo and a score of activities
The Village of Santiago’s titular golf course, El Santiago Executive Golf Course, is one of the easiest to play in the community. Its sister course, however, is not one for beginners. El Diablo Executive Golf Course challenges players with uneven greens. In comparison, El Santiago offers wide, flat greens. While all subdivisions in The Villages have an adult pool and a small activity area, the Village of Santiago’s rec center is more expansive because it’s a hub for multiple neighborhoods. El Santiago Recreation Center is a lakeside building with a theme that brings Jimmy Buffet’s coastal sound to mind. With the palm trees outside, there are pickleball and tennis courts, lakefront walkways, fishing spots and an all-ages pool for residents and their guests. Inside, the Hula Lounge Room hosts fun classes, from pottery to acrylic painting, and the gathering rooms provide space for club meetings. There are more than 3,500 resident-run clubs in The Villages, and neighbors often form them together. “In my loop, the ROMEOs — Retired Old Men Eating Out — would go get lunch once a month. And the GOLFEOs — Good Old Friends Eating Out — would have a monthly dinner,” says Wendt. “There were also ladies who went shooting together every first Monday.”Spanish Springs Town Square
Spanish Springs Town Square recently celebrated its 30th anniversary as The Villages’ first town square, home to boutiques, shops, restaurants and plenty of entertainment. At its heart is Sharon L. Morse Performing Arts Center, a popular theater that seats more than 1,000. There’s always something happening at this venue, from local performance groups to Tony- and Grammy-winning Broadway musicals. There’s also nightly entertainment outside in the square. Between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. every evening, the square hosts free, live entertainment for villagers. Those on the patios of surrounding restaurants can listen, too. Amerikanos Grille even hosts its own live shows during the day while serving a Mediterranean menu. Next to Spanish Springs Town Square are convenient stores for day-to-day shopping, including Publix, Winn-Dixie, Belk and Target. Not far from Florida’s Turnpike
Getting around by golf cart is the norm in The Villages, but travel outside of the community is car-dependent. Orlando is about 60 miles away, with the closest international airport. Florida’s Turnpike is a little less than 10 miles south. The closest hospital, UF Health The Villages Hospital, is 2 miles away.
