Country club living in The Villages
On the north side of The Villages, the country’s largest 55-plus community, the Village of Santo Domingo offers beautiful golf course homes close to shopping, dining and entertainment. Like other villages, Santo Domingo is abuzz throughout the day with golf cart-riding villagers heading to enjoy their community’s many amenities. In less than a 5-mile drive from home, residents can reach several golf courses, recreation centers and the nearest town square, where live music plays nightly from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Not too long after the last song ends, streets in The Villages grow quiet, according to villager Keith Caulk, a Realtor with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty. “If you see more than one golf cart on the road at night, consider yourself lucky. We’re an older community. Most of us are up at 5:30 or 6 o’clock in the morning. We like to joke that we roll the streets up after 9.”

Golf course Designer Homes
The Village of Santo Domingo was developed between 1997 and 2000. Mature palms, oaks and poincianas adorn manicured front lawns. Many homes have sought-after golf course views. Farther south, in The Villages’s newer subdivisions, these properties might price close to $900,000, but because Santo Domingo is an older village with smaller models, golf course properties start around the high $400,000s and cap in the $700,000s. These homes are typically from The Villages’s Designer Home series, which offers the largest floorplans in Santo Domingo. Designer Homes on regular lots range from the high $300,000s to $500,000. Courtyard Villas are on tight properties with small outdoor courtyards where residents can privately enjoy the warm weather. They range from around $300,000 to just below $400,000. The Patio Villa series offers the smallest models in one-, two- and three-bedroom floorplans. Prices for these vinyl-sided homes range from the low $200,000s to $300,000. All villagers pay a monthly amenity fee for access to nearby country clubs, recreation centers, pools and more.

Hacienda Hills and Tierra Del Sol
Within 2 miles of the neighborhood are Tierra Del Sol Championship Golf Course and Hacienda Hills Championship Golf Course, home to two of PGA legend Chi Chi Rodriguez’s favorite holes. Tierra Del Sol’s clubhouse is a favorite for its cozy bar and grill. Local musicians play afternoon shows on the restaurant’s patio between Wednesday and Saturday. El Diablo Executive Course and El Santiago Executive Golf Course are closer to the neighborhood, about a mile away. Executive courses do not require a greens fee from villagers. Golfing aside, recreation centers are the main hubs for activity. The beach-themed El Santiago Recreation Center offers tennis, pickleball, bocce, shuffleboard and fencing facilities. There’s also a lake for local anglers. The rec center’s gathering rooms hold fun classes and club meetings. The Villages is home to more than 3,500 resident-run clubs. “There are travel clubs, different car clubs, clubs for every home state… If there isn’t a club you want to join, you can start your own,” Caulk says.

Spanish Springs Town Center
Spanish Springs Town Square is only 2 miles from the Village of Santo Domingo. This retail and restaurant hub has well-known chains, such as Dunkin’ and Panera Bread, as well as upscale dine-in spots like Coastal Del Mar. From mussels and oysters to crab cakes and sushi rolls, Coastal Del Mar serves a menu of seafood favorites that can be enjoyed inside or out on the patio. However, outdoor seating is hard to get around dinner time. “The square has live music outside every evening,” Caulk says. “We hear about everything — country, classic rock, pop. Most people living in The Villages are baby boomers, so there’s a lot from the ‘70s and ‘80s.” More theatrical musical performances are shown at Spanish Springs’s Sharon L. Morse Performing Arts Center, which recently presented the Tony- and Emmy-winning Broadway show Hadestown. Publix, Winn-Dixie and other businesses convenient for errand runs can be found near Spanish Springs Town Center, along U.S. 441.
