Kelly West offers comparative affordability near Pittsburgh’s East End
Kelly West is an established neighborhood in the borough of Wilkinsburg with a fusion of historic charm and modern revitalization. A blend of asphalt and century-old brick streets reflects the development spreading from Pittsburgh’s East End into Wilkinsburg, bridging the past with the promise of future growth. “They’re bringing in the shops, the community events and the organizations that will keep people in the neighborhood,” says Ashley Pugliesi, a Realtor with Realty One Group Platinum. Kelly West is one of the first communities in Wilkinsburg to see these changes, as it borders Pittsburgh and includes part of the trendy Regent Square neighborhood. “Regent Square is unique because it includes portions of Pittsburgh, Edgewood, Swissvale and Wilkinsburg. People will choose to live outside of the city because the tax rate is lower, and Wilkinsburg is one of the few spots that actually offers affordable housing,” Pugliesi says.

The neighborhood has a mix of American Foursquares, Victorian-style homes and two-story cottages with covered front porches. Some streets also have rowhomes and multifamily properties with two or three units. Home prices typically range from $150,000 to $275,000, although properties in the neighborhood’s southwestern corner tend to be more expensive, as residents consider them part of Regent Square. Houses closer to Regent Square combine historic charm with modern amenities and can sell for anywhere from $300,000 to $415,000. While Wilkinsburg has historically struggled with high vacancy rates, a 2022 report from the Wilkinsburg Development Corporation shows that neighborhoods west of the busway have fewer vacant properties than those farther east. The borough also tends to lean towards rentals, and nearly 85% of Kelly West residents are renters.

The Wilkinsburg School District partners with PPS
Kelly West is part of the Wilkinsburg Borough School District, which earns an overall grade of C-plus from Niche. The district serves prekindergarten through sixth grade and operates two schools: Kelly Primary School and Turner Intermediate School. Kids can walk to Kelly Primary, which earns a C-plus. Turner Intermediate receives a C, and a partnership with the B-minus-rated Pittsburgh Public Schools allows seventh through 12th-grade students to attend the C-minus-rated Pittsburgh Westinghouse Academy 6-12. All three schools are set to undergo renovations after the two school districts received $15.3 million from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Renew America’s Schools grant program in 2024 to increase their energy efficiency. Pittsburgh Westinghouse also offers several career and technical education programs. "It's great that the school is providing students with real-life skills. They're graduating high school with their licenses and certifications," Pugliesi says. Nearby private school options include A-rated Pittsburgh Urban Christian School, which serves prekindergarten through 8th grade.

Local businesses in Wilkinsburg’s Trenton Avenue business district
A small business district on Trenton Avenue is a prime example of how redevelopment is spreading from Pittsburgh’s East End to Wilkinsburg. While the corridor still has some vacant storefronts, newer additions such as BB&Bur Pastry Kitchen and Bakery are increasing its foot traffic. The bakery is just down the street from local businesses like Fungus Books & Records and Workshop PGH, known for its collection of Pittsburgh-made home goods and craft classes. When the weather’s nice, a small sidewalk café outside Madeleine Bakery & Bistro is a popular spot for residents to enjoy fresh pastries and coffee. Biddle’s Escape is another neighborhood coffeehouse that embraces a boho feel with art on the walls and eclectic knick-knacks for sale.
For more shopping and dining, residents are about a mile from Regent Square’s trendy commercial corridor on South Braddock Avenue. Kelly West is also less than a mile from downtown Wilkinsburg, which features Aldi, Save A Lot and a handful of restaurants.
