Get your kicks on Route 66
Situated 50 miles from Flagstaff and Prescott, the small community of Ash Fork is secluded in the Arizona desert. This small town of less than 400 people originated as a quarry settlement and railroad town of the Old West along the famous Route 66. Several fires have devastated Ash Fork throughout its history, and Route 66 is less important thanks to the installation of Interstate 40 in the 1950s. Today, Ash Fork is a small, quiet village where homes sell for a quarter of the state’s average price of $430,000. It’s a relatively affordable option within driving distance of Seligman, the rodeo town of Prescott and the urban center of Flagstaff. “It’s for people who really want to be away from the hustle and bustle,” says local Realtor Paula Smith with RE/MAX of Ash Fork. “It’s got the nostalgia of Route 66 with easy access to north, south, east and west; you can head west to California, east to New Mexico and Colorado, and north to Utah, and south to Phoenix.”
Route 66 passes through Ash Fork and connects travelers to Flagstaff and Prescott.

Remembering the Old West
With a history strongly linked to the settlement of the Old West and the heyday of Route 66, Ash Fork is full of history and culture. Former Arizona Governor and radio personality Jack Williams is from here; he held office in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The historic Escalante Hotel was in town, and Ash Fork is still the site of several businesses connected to its Route 66 heritage. The Ash Fork Route 66 Museum tells the story of the town’s evolution from Old West settlement to highway community, and dedicated volunteers run this free attraction.

Parcels and properties in Ash Fork
Devastating fires and traffic diversion away from Route 66 caused the population and housing inventory in Ash Fork to decline. New local businesses from bars to the rest stop, however, have brought in traffic from Interstate 40 and spurred a renewed interest in home and land buying. Parcels as large as 13 acres have sold for as little as $10,000, while fixer-upper homes and well-maintained ranch-style residences can go for $130,000 to $326,000.
Most homes in Ash Fork are ranch-style sitting on generous lots.

Camping under the stars
While Ash Fork has no park system, residents are surrounded by wide-open desert. Just a few miles to the west, the 40-acre A Spark in the Dark Campground is a popular camping venue. Owned by a local who rents out the campground to travelers, this site is known for its nighttime sky display. Visitors describe the grounds as more like a National Forest campground than a usual dry-camping locale due to its immense size and variety of nature.
