Druid Hills pairs privacy with convenience to Williamsburg
The Druid Hills neighborhood sits on Jamestown Road just outside Williamsburg city limits, a quick 3-mile drive from the city center. Yet the neighborhood feels farther away due to its peaceful suburban character. Local families enjoy its pairing of privacy and convenience, plus recreation options and a highly rated school system. “It tends to be a really good draw for a lot of families, whether you’re upsizing or downsizing,” says Marshall Toney, an associate broker with eXp Realty who has sold in Williamsburg for 23 years. “You get a lot of the charm of Williamsburg and of being in a subdivision, without feeling like you’re in a subdivision.”
Ranch and colonial-style homes from various eras
Narrow suburban drives branch off Jamestown Road, often ending in cul-de-sacs, where tree canopies provide plenty of privacy. “You have mature trees throughout,” Toney says. Different sections were built at different times, ranging from midcentury properties to newer builds. Ranch- and Colonial-style homes sell for $330,000 to $620,000. Newer and larger houses, some backing up to small lakes, can go from $630,000 to $800,000. Condos and townhomes are also clustered in developments just off Route 199, typically selling for $130,000 to $410,000. “It’s less density overall, which tends to be a pretty appealing component for most buyers who are looking,” Toney says.
Highly rated schools, plus a nearby college
The Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools system serves Druid Hills and receives an A-minus grade from Niche. Kids can start at B-rated Laurel Lane Elementary before heading to A-minus-rated Berkeley Middle. Lafayette High also gets an A-minus. According to the Virginia Department of Education, the school recently exceeded its targeted graduation rate of 84%, with 91% of students graduating within four years. Private options include Walsingham Academy, which receives an A-plus grade for kindergarten through 12th grade. Two miles up Jamestown Road, William & Mary is the second-oldest university in the United States.
Recreation at the Kingswood Pool and in Jamestown close by
The Kingswood Pool is located in the center of the neighborhood. While the pool itself is only open during the summer, the playgrounds, picnic shelters and green spaces around it are popular throughout the year. More recreation is available 4 miles away in Jamestown , including a trailhead for the Virginia Capital Trail, which runs 50 miles to Richmond . Jamestown Beach Event Park is popular for swimming and sunbathing. Across the street, Jamestown Settlement has a replica of the first European colony in America, and Colonial Williamsburg is 3 miles from Druid Hills. Tickets are needed for most experiences, but locals enjoy walking or jogging through the grounds for free. The Busch Gardens Williamsburg theme park is 7 miles away and open year-round.
Neighborhood events and Colonial Williamsburg celebrations
The annual Kingswood Klam 5k draws runners from around the neighborhood and benefits the swim team that calls the pool home. Otherwise, events often center around Colonial Williamsburg. Grand Illumination is popular with locals and visitors alike, marking the holiday season with a fife-and-drum parade and fireworks. William & Mary fields NCAA Division I athletics, and residents regularly attend football and basketball games.
Easy access to Williamsburg and Interstate 64
The Williamsburg town center is roughly 3 miles from Druid Hills, straight down sidewalk-lined Jamestown Road. The Williamsburg Area Transit Authority operates a bus route, but most people drive to get around. Route 199 is located at the extent of the neighborhood and skirts the edge of Williamsburg, leading to Interstate 64 in either direction. Newport News is roughly 20 miles southeast, and Richmond is 50 miles west. Richmond International Airport serves destinations across the country. Riverside Doctors’ Hospital Williamsburg is 5 miles away. “You’re at Riverside in a matter of minutes,” Toney says. “That’s probably one reason we don’t see as much turnover, because even with that older market being there, they love the convenience of being that close to a major hospital.”
Shopping centers in the neighborhood, and more at New Town
The northern section of Jamestown Road in Druid Hills is fairly commercial. The Colony Square Shopping Center has several retail stores, plus 1607 Coffee Company. Just down the street, Old Chickahominy House serves breakfast and lunch and is known especially for its biscuits. Williamsburg Crossing is home to Food Lion for groceries alongside eateries like Bruster’s Real Ice Cream. For more shopping and dining, residents can head into downtown Williamsburg or to New Town , about 3 miles away.
