Housing in Arrondale mostly consists of brick ranch-style homes built in the 1970s and Craftsmans from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Houses sit close together in neat rows. Prices range from $210,000 for homes just over 1,000 square feet to $700,000 for houses around 2,700 square feet. “Wilmington is not a cheap area,” Roggeman says. “Yes, we’re in the South, but if you want to live this close to the ocean, you have to pay to play.” Residents of the Kirkwood subdivision are required to pay fees to a homeowners association and have access to a community pool. There are also townhomes in Kirkwood that are often rented.Arrondale is bordered by a major road
A lack of sidewalks or public transportation makes Arrondale a car-dependent neighborhood. Carolina Beach Road borders the east side of the neighborhood and serves as the area’s main thoroughfare. “If you’re in Carolina Beach and you work in Wilmington or need to go to Leland, there’s only one way in and out unless you’re taking the ferry,” Roggeman says. “And that’s to go up U.S. 421, also known as Carolina Beach Road." Carolina Beach itself is a 5- to 7-mile drive away, while visiting downtown Wilmington means a trip of about 10 to 13 miles. The approximately 14-mile drive to Wilmington International Airport will take around 25 minutes, depending on traffic.Schools taking care of the environment
Both Anderson Elementary and Murray Middle earn A-minus grades from Niche. In 2021, Murray Middle installed solar panels to help save energy and teach students about conservation and environmental efficiency. Ashley High scores a B and is home to the Marine Science Academy. Sophomores and juniors can apply to the program to study marine biology and oceanography. The program partners with the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Cape Fear Community College to provide internships and other opportunities.Shopping and Dining at Monkey Junction
Masonboro Commons, a small shopping center on Carolina Beach Road, has Food Lion, Planet Fitness and a handful of restaurants and fast-food chains. Seaside Bagels is a local eatery that accommodates a variety of food sensitivities. Arrondale is south of a popular section of Wilmington referred to as Monkey Junction. “It’s where Carolina Beach Road and North Carolina Highway 132 merge together,” says Sean Skutnik, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty who has lived in Wilmington since the late 1980s. “Years ago, there was an old gas station where a guy had pet monkeys.” Today, in addition to big-box stores like Walmart, the area has several eateries, including Cape Fear Seafood Co., which has served coastal dishes like shrimp and grits for over 10 years.Boat regattas and kite flying at the beach
Carolina Beach holds a few annual events throughout the year. In the fall, residents can launch their colorful watercrafts in the Carolina Beach Dragon Boat Regatta and Festival or participate in the Cape Fear Kite Festival. The Carolina Beach Music Festival celebrates the sound and legacy of Beach music, which was born in the coastal Carolinas. The festival is held on the boardwalk in the summer.Walkable parks and a short drive to the water
Veterans Park is located in the neighborhood and features six baseball fields, basketball and tennis courts, and picnic shelters. The 212-acre park also has a playground for kids. At River Road Park, residents can enjoy lunch at the picnic shelter, go fishing at the pier or launch a boat or kayak in the Cape Fear River. Monterey Heights Park is a small, recently renovated neighborhood park with a playground. Arrondale is also close to both Carolina Beach and Masonboro Island, a nature preserve that’s a popular spot for fishing, boating and camping.
