Port City community close to downtown, home to new shopping mall

Barclay West-Hanover Heights sits in a sweet spot between the suburbs and downtown Wilmington. “It’s almost like the suburbs but being close to downtown,” says Derek Criscitiello, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage who’s lived along the North Carolina coast his entire life. "You get the best of both worlds: bigger lots, nice homes but still in the heart of the city." Barclay West-Hanover Heights gets its name from the established subdivision in its northern half and the new retail development filling its southern end. A dense forest of pines sits in the middle. Surrounded by retail corridors, the community offers quick access to area parks, an acclaimed art museum and Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, one of the city’s top employers. The area is also home to more than a dozen houses of worship, including Cape Fear Presbyterian Church, Temple Baptist Church and the nondenominational Lifepoint Church.

Ranch-style homes on half-acre lots shaded by pines

Single-family homes line narrow, unmarked streets north of the dense forest in Barclay West-Hanover Heights. The neighborhood features primarily midcentury ranch-style homes with a mix of brick, shingle and vinyl siding, resting on lots about a half-acre in size. However, a small collection of pastel patio homes from the late 1980s fills the HOA-controlled Southwood subdivision off Shipyard Boulevard, where properties come with monthly fees of around $275. The neighborhood’s maturity can be seen in its concrete and gravel driveways, which vary in condition and lead to attached garages and carports. Tall pine trees and magnolias shade modestly landscaped front yards. While lawns are spacious, living space is on the smaller side, averaging around 1,300 square feet, significantly below the national average of 1,928 square feet. Home prices declined 3% from 2023 to 2024, now ranging from $240,000 to $330,000. The neighborhood also has two condo communities with units from $198,000 to $275,000.

The new Pointe at Barclay mall features a movie theater

Barclay West-Hanover Heights is home to one of Wilmington’s newest shopping malls, the Pointe at Barclay. This sprawling development features familiar chains, local businesses, medical offices and the Pointe 14 movie theater. French cuisine and high tea are the specialties at Far From France Bakery and Bistro, while Peño Mediterranean Grill offers a casual setting for gyro bowls and platters. The Cameron Art Museum sits across from the mall. Visitors can stroll through a sculpture garden, explore the rotating exhibits or take an art class. Harris Teeter and Food Lion anchor smaller shopping centers and strip malls lining U.S. Route 421 and Independence Boulevard. Independence Mall, Wilmington’s only indoor mall, offers name-brand and department-store shopping less than 3 miles away.

Eugene Ashley High inspires the next marine scientists

New Hanover County Schools offers some school choice. Students can apply to one of four specialty high schools or one of the system's traditional high schools, each of which has a signature program. Most of the neighborhood feeds into Edwin A. Alderman Elementary. Earning an overall rating of B from Niche, the school backs up to Piney Ridge Nature Preserve, home to the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden. In the spring, students can walk around the garden’s rare habitat to spot Venus flytraps and several varieties of pitcher plants. Williston Middle School receives a C-plus. Its student-run news team regularly publishes the Williston Sun, a print and digital paper detailing school happenings, as well as a podcast. Eugene Ashley High gets a B and offers a Marine Science Academy. The neighborhood is also close to several private schools, including the A-plus-rated Cape Fear Academy.

Hanover Heights Neighborhood Park and nearby city green spaces

From a neighborhood pocket park to one of Wilmington’s largest green spaces, outdoor recreation is close by in Barclay West-Hanover Heights. Hanover Heights Neighborhood Park is hidden between homes along Adelaide Drive, and it features a playground and a picnic table shaded by towering pines. The 250-acre Greenfield Park draws visitors from around the city. Centered around the expansive Greenfield Lake, it has a range of activities, including fishing, kayaking and skateboarding. The park is also home to the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater, which hosts concerts and free performances by Cape Fear Shakespeare. On the west side of the lake, Legion Stadium offers an outdoor pool and pickleball courts. The Wilmington Sharks, a collegiate summer-league baseball team, play at Buck Hardee Field. The Gary Shell Cross City Trail parallels South 17th Street for bike rides around Halyburton Park, a nature preserve with beehives maintained by the New Hanover County Beekeepers Association. The Midtown YMCA at Temple Baptist Activity Center sits just south of the neighborhood, offering members access to a gymnasium, group fitness classes and personal training. More than 10 golf courses dot Wilmington, and the 18-hole course at Pine Valley Country Club is a little over a mile from the neighborhood.

Driving, biking or riding a bus around Wilmington

The neighborhood has quick access to U.S. Routes 421 and 117, two main roads through the city. Downtown Wilmington is less than 6 miles north, and Carolina Beach, a popular beach-day destination, is roughly 12 miles south. “If you want to go downtown, it’s only like 15 minutes or so,” says Elisa Roels, the owner of Cape Fear Realty Group, who’s lived in Wilmington for over two decades. "Carolina Beach is 20 minutes away." Wave Transit buses stop along Route 117 and South 17th Street for rides to the Riverfront District and Midtown. Bike lanes line Independence Boulevard, which features several Gary Shell Cross City Trail access points. Wilmington International Airport is about 7 miles north.
