Why families and retirees settle down in Hewlett’s Creek
Set along its namesake waterway, Hewlett’s Creek is a peaceful neighborhood offering an appealing blend of waterside living and suburban convenience. The community is an attractive option for families looking to be zoned for highly rated New Hanover County schools and be within reach of Midtown malls, as well as the sun, sand and surf of Wrightsville Beach. The neighborhood also appeals to active and outdoorsy retirees for its proximity to popular parks and the Intracoastal Waterway. Hewlett’s Creek has a relatively low risk of crime, receiving a CAP Index Crime Score of 3 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4 out of 10.
Wide streets and cul-de-sacs lined with diverse home styles
Hewlett’s Creek is primarily a residential neighborhood. Within its network of small subdivisions, single-family homes built between the 1970s and today rest on wide streets that often end in cul-de-sacs. Ranch-style and contemporary homes are the most common, but there are also Colonial Revivals, farmhouse-inspired designs and various neotraditional and Craftsman-style builds. Towering pines and mature magnolias shade yards ranging from roughly a third of an acre to more than a half-acre. Concrete driveways lead to attached garages, and some properties feature in-ground pools. Waterfront homes typically have private docks and boardwalks along Hewletts Creek.
Homes typically cost between $250,000 and $770,000. However, properties in upscale, HOA-controlled subdivisions such as Beasley on Masonborough and Tyndall start at around $870,000 and can reach $1.8 million. Townhouses range from $190,000 to $620,000. Homes typically sell in less than 40 days on the market, which is faster than the national average. While most residents are homeowners, the neighborhood is home to a small population of renters.

New Hanover County Schools earns an A-minus overall rating from Niche. The district, with magnet schools and specialty programs, offers school choice through an application lottery. Schools serving Hewlett’s Creek include the A-minus-rated Holly Tree Elementary, the A-minus-rated Roland-Grise Middle and John T. Hoggard High, which receives an A rating and is home to the district’s International Baccalaureate Program. “Hoggard is one of our high-scoring and award-winning schools,” says Grace Hodgkins, a Realtor with Sold Buy the Sea Realty, who’s been a Wilmingtonian since 1994. “Their football team played in the state championship the other night. … It’s an athletic powerhouse.” The A-plus-rated Cape Fear Academy is a nearby private option. The University of North Carolina at Wilmington, a top employer, is about 5 miles away.
Local restaurants and Midtown malls are a short drive away
The Courtyard at Masonboro shopping center is adjacent to the neighborhood and is home to The Veggie Wagon, a beloved gourmet market featuring local goods, as well as a few restaurants. The Cardinal serves a mix of coastal cuisine and comforting American fare. A few doors down, The Crown & Fiddle Pub and Kitchen offers a mix of Irish and British dishes. “[The Crown & Fiddle] is one of the liveliest bars. Everybody goes there to watch games and socialize,” Hodgkins says. Port City Java, a regional coffee chain, is a favorite morning stop with a drive-through. Publix, Harris Teeter and Food Lion are about 2 miles away on College Road, a major thoroughfare and commercial corridor through Midtown featuring popular shopping destinations such as University Centre. Independence Mall, Wilmington’s only indoor mall, is less than 4 miles away. Mayfaire Town Center's high-end boutiques, national retailers and movie theater are around 7 miles away.
A neighborhood club and nearby parks offer plenty of recreation
Nearby parks include James E.L. Wade Park, where a paved path loops around an 11-acre wetland, and Long Leaf Park, which is popular for its athletic facilities, dog park, splash pad and playground. Hewletts Creek is popular for kayaking and boating, but residents have to time their excursions with the tide. Trails End Park, next to Masonboro Yacht Club, offers the closest public boat ramp along the Intracoastal Waterway. Holly Tree Racquet and Swim Club is in the neighborhood and offers its members access to its facilities, as well as its swim and tennis programs. Golfers have two 18-hole courses nearby: the public Wilmington Municipal Golf Course and the private course at Pine Valley Country Club. Surfing, swimming and sunbathing are the big to-dos at Wrightsville Beach, less than 10 miles away.
A bikeable neighborhood close to College Road and other highways
While Hewlett’s Creek is not very walkable, the neighborhood has a few bike-friendly streets, such as Eagles Nest Drive, which links cyclists to multi-use paths and the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail. Most people drive to get around town. College Road is nearby and connects commuters to other major roads, including U.S. Routes 117 and 421. Interstate 40, Historic Downtown and Wilmington International Airport are all less than 10 miles away. The closest Wave Transit bus stops are on College Road.
A note about flooding, hurricanes and Hewletts Creek's water quality
Hurricanes are a reality of living in the Port City. “It’s the trade-off. It’s the risk you take, but it’s well worth it,” Hodgkins says. Properties in the neighborhood along Hewletts Creek rest within or near flood hazard areas, according to flood maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Collecting nearly 160 million gallons of stormwater runoff each year, Hewletts Creek is a critical waterway with a reputation for being one of the city’s most polluted streams. Shellfishing is prohibited, but decades-long efforts are working to improve water quality and restore the watershed. The development of James E.L. Wade Park as a stormwater wetland is one such project.
